Well today we start over with a new idea too stop the pulling. Back to the flat collar and sitting every time he pulls. A normal 20 min walk turnned into a hour and fifteen minutes but hopefully after a week of this he will catch on.
So I thought I would keep you updated and let you know if this works. Things we have tried gentle leader, haltie and other collars but he is just to strong at seven months. So it back to the begining for Gauge.
Day one we figured out he will heel nicely on the side walk at a good pace but when you hit the trail it sit sit sit sit sit sit sit and sit sit. ( at least he has the sit down pat) Poor thing had too do so many sits that he just layed down bored lol. I hope he catches on soon poor thing doesn't seem to have a clue why he is sitting yet. Dar

I am trying to train my 7mth this same thing. She is sooooooooooo stuburn!! May I ask you what kind of collar you find works best? I have only put collars on her for her ID tags(not for training) She has a harness for walks. The harness is not working at all with her staying focused? I was going to purchase the gentle leader, it sound like it does no better?!! Sorry, to go on and on. Just wanted to also know if yours has had obedience training?

i am struggling with zoey (5 months) pulling as well. she always has. we have a gentle leader and it works wonders. however it is nothing but a crutch. the second i take it off she pulls like crazy. over the past week or so i have been using the "stand like a tree" method and things have gotten a little better.

i would love to be able to walk her on a regular leash with no pulling, so hopefully all this patience pays off. good luck

Why not continue with the gentle leader if it works??

I have read a couple of comments re gentle leaders and haltis and how good they work. I am somewhat confused at the comments to follow that they are only a crutch and as soon as the dog is back on a regular collar & leash they pull again. Is there some reason the gentle leader could not be used permanently? If it works so well it sounds like something I would stick with if I had this problem with my dog (which I may have down the track but so far at 13 weeks he is fine on the lead).

The problem is relying on the GL for life and the dog never learns how to walk on a regular collar. Some also become desensitized to it, so you are left back at square one with the pulling. It's best just to train the dog properly from the get go - it takes a little time on your part, but it's worth the end result.

My Sarge is 95 pounds and a real puller. We tried everything on him until finally I found somthing that works. I bought the Sporn Halter and it is wonderful. It won't yet your dog pull it squeezes it's leg. It doesn't hurt Sarge at all. Every once in a while put a regular collar on (the halter is kinda time comsuming when your dog doesn't cooperate) and he sure knows the difference and pulls me life a rag dog. Hope this helps

My pulling Gauge day 2 update

Morning walk, he was well behaved but I only did 45min walking on lead on the sidewalk, pulled and had to sit about 12 times. Afternoon walk great little pulling walking on sidewalk then we passed a park needless to say we did alot of sitting there. lol. This also was a 45min walk but it did not poop him out. He grabbed my straw broom and ran around the pool with it. Therefore we headed back out again to the leash free field and played with his doggy friends. I had to drag him home from there he was so tired. For the person that asked I am just using a flat normal collar. I still canmot figure out how he is going to figure out that pulling on the leash is going to make him have to sit. I hope it clicks in some day. Update soon.

you beat me to the response and said everything i would have. the GL is great if you plan on using it for the duration of life, however I do not. I hate walking her on it and having everyone look at her like she is wearing a muzzle because she is a biter or something. i thought the GL would help ease her into the leash, n0t so much. starting from scratch!

It's still a crutch...quit taking the easy way out. ;) Just take the extra time to train him to walk nicely on the leash - it's really not that hard. And think of the money you will save by not having to buy all these devices.

If it's not working, try something else. :)

Did either of you check out these training links I gave earlier? They were very helpful with my puller.
