I just have to say that I love my two boxer boys. I tell Marq often that I am in boxer heaven. Marq and I are the proud parents of an 8 week old beautiful brindle boy. Diego is his name since we drove from phoenix to San Diego to get him. So anyways, I just wanted to relate to everyone what a very patient big brother Oscar is. Diego seems to think that Oscar is one of his chew toys. Diego literaly hangs from Oscars jowls, and poor Oscar just deals with it. Oscar will wrestle back and every now and then will hold Diego down to say that's enough, but for the most part Oscar just lets Diego knaw and knaw and knaw. It is kinda funny to watch but I feel for Oscar. Has anyone else experienced this, and I should I stop Diego. I figure Oscar will put him in his place when he has had enough.

Thanks
Marta, Diego, and especially Oscar the living chew toy

I experienced this with Fritzi when she was a baby. Her older brother (unneutered) lives up the street. When he would come to visit, Fritzi would not only hang off his jowls but also his testicles   She looked so funny flying through the air hanging on to the poor dog's backside, as he ran around the yard! The dog's owner said it was okay because if the dog didn't like it - the dog would let her know...she did out grow this behavior eventually...

Ahhh that's so sweet. I'm sure Oscar will let his little bro know when it's time to stop.

When we got Tommy he was just the same with Billy and Billy was so patient. Now that chewing and tugging has turned into washing. Tommy will lay and wash Billy's face and ears for hours!

Riley who is 21 months is such a nice big brother, he's so very patient with Mason who will be 8 months old next month. He still allows Mason to grab his jowls and shake. I hate seeing him do it, but I know that Riley will say enough when he's had enough so I let just them work it out. :)

We would distract the pup with another toy when they are doing things to hurt the other dog or people. It's part of teaching them to behave. Unfortuantely it doen't end. We have an 8 yr old male and have to keep an eye on them. He is tolerant to a certain extent, then he has enough and will let her know. SHe can over tire him and we have to seperate them.

There is no pat answer. It depends on several factors. If the older dog is still fairly young, he/she may tolerate puppy outbursts better than an older dog.

Older dogs tend to tolerate the foolishness to a point and then may make a charge at the puppy. How hostile their charge is will vary. With some it's a bluff, while it may be for real with others.

Indy is only a year older than Ava, so he was 15 months when Ava came home with us. Indy is either smart, or part wimp. When Ava inflicted pain, he'd let out a sharp, loud cry of pain, and she'd back off.

In our case, Indy taught Ava bite inhibition, knowing when and how to use her mouth in play without causing pain or injury. But sif the bigger dog tolerates it, then the puppy will grow up thinking that it is acceptable. So, this is where you would have to step in to calm things down.

I guess we were fortunate.

ours was a different situation : we had the pup when we got an older rescue girl. the rescue had been abused by one of her previous owners so she was terrified of us but loved the pup!! buttercup(pup) was almost potty trained and could sit and lay, so after a while Tes (rescue) started sitting and laying when we would give buttercup those commands!! they would play and rough house but neither one of them would ever put the other in place! Now, Tes is great with us and still great with buttercup and when either one of them have enough they both have no problem letting the other know about it :) basically, i wouldn't worry about it :) if they get tired of each other they will let them and everyone else know!! :)

Thanks evryone for the words of advice. I have pretty much let them work it out on their own. It is quite a sight to behold. The one thing I will say is that they tire each other out, which enables me to get some sleep during the day.(I work nights). I love my two boxer boys. If Marq would let me I would have a house full of boxer babes.
