My mother may have skin cancer.

My dad has had several suspicious 'moles' removed from his face. We have a family history of skin cancer & he was previously a construction worker working in the sun all day. His only one that was cancerous was in the crease where his nose & cheek meet. It has been removed numerous times & kept coming back . Once it was finally removed he went to a plastic surgeon & now only has a small scar from the surgeries.
A guy at work had a melanoma removed from his back last year & underwent a biopsy & then had to have his lymph nodes in his armpits removed because they looked suspicious too. But it ended up being beingin. He didn't have to have any radiation or chemo & just gets blood work every few months.
So just because they say the C word doesn't mean it always turns out bad I know there's a website that explains the different types of skin ca & when I remember it I'll PM you.

Mandy, I will keep your mom in my thoughts and prayers! My dad has basal cell carcinoma on his face and ears. This is easily treatable thank goodness, he goes in every 3 months or so. He beat prostate cancer too, so he is a fighter. Now, just recently my husbands grandma went in to get a dark (she thought it was an age spot) spot off her face since the doctor didn't like that it was odd shaped. We just found out it was basal cell, just yesturday and they said she should be fine-they got the margins so there are no abnormal cells left. You are in my prayers I hope your mom is doing ok.

Mandy I know what it's like to worry about your Mom. My Mom had some polips removed from her colon a couple of years ago and the waiting was horrible. They turned out to be pre-cancerous (thank God) so now re-checks every 3 years. I also have 2 Aunts and a cousin who had skin cancer, tho I don't know what kind.
I will keep your Mom and your family in my thoughts and prayers for a good outcome. Try to stay strong.

MarinaS - No word yet as to what the tests have shown. We still have about 7 full days before we'll know for sure. We're all still hoping it's nothing, but only the doctor's confirmation will give us relief.

Finally got the results!!

We finally found out the results of the biopsy yesterday. Turns out that it was Basal Cell Sarcoma (sp??) and because it was removed, it's 100% all gone!!! appicon appicon

I can't tell you guys how relieved everyone is right now!! Last night we went out to the movies to sort of "celebrate". We went to see a movie of my mom's choice which she picked The Life of David Gale, which was a very good movie, but it was kind of weird.

That is so great to hear about your mom! Just make sure she goes to get check ups often! My dad goes 2x's a year for a complete look over his body for any spots, his biggest one was on his arm and they got it all too! That was 2 years ago! I am so happy for your family! :D appicon

calcium and skin cancer....

That's great news Mandy! Glad to hear your mom is free of skin cancer now.

I just wanted to share somethings that I've learned over the last few years about basil cell carcinomas and possible links between calcium deficiencies and an increased risk of developing basil cell carcinomas and also well water with arsenic causing skin cancers.

I've had 21 basil cell carcinomas and 1 squamous skin cancer (this one is more serious as it can spread more quickly). I also recently out that I now have osteoporosis.

I was on the site for the American Medical Association and did a keyword search using "cancer and calcium" of their archives of the Journal they publixh just on a whim and found some interesting articles.

In one they said that they were unable to figure out why patients developed an unusually high number of basil cell carcinomas when they were given "calcium blockers" for other medical conditions. I have been lactose intolerant my whole life and thought nothing of it, never took calcium supplements like I should have, and now I have had an unusually high number of basil cell carcinomas for my age.

Consequently I now take calcium religiously hoping that this will help prevent any more from developing. (I have always used sunscreen since I began getting basil cell carcinomas prior to sunscreen being available, so when it came out on the market I began using it daily).

It's something to think about...your mom might want to have her bone density checked out.

Also well water that has arsenic has been proven to cause basil cell carcinomas....
