My Mom needs some vibes... (long)

I just got back from visiting her. She seems to be doing alright, could definately be better though. The hospital she is in has 12 floors and she had to wait in the trauma unit allnight for a regular room to be open. She got to the hospital yesterday around 1pm and didn't get into a room until about 11am this morning...busy place.
They still have a neck brace on her and she has to lay flat so basically she is laying there staring at the ceiling. She looks even worse today because the bruising is really starting to show. It seems at this time there is not going to be any surgery but it may be a possibility in the future for her back. They have her drugged up pretty good so she doesn't hurt a whole lot but they are starving her. Trauma still hasn't released her to eat anything, which I don't understand, guess they are too busy to.
Her friend, is doing good, she is up and moving around in a wheelchair, has been eating since last night and will probably be going home tomorrow or the day after. My Mom definately got the worst of it, of which she is greatful, especially since her friend did have her seatbelt on. The both of them were very lucky.
The weird thing about it though, is another friend of my Mom's, gets "feelings" or "sees" things and she told my Mom a few months ago that she had a feeling that my Mom and Andrea (her friend) would be in a serious car accident and that my Mom would be driving on the way back from one of their road trips. That is exactly what happened, they were on the way back from going up to New York to buy a new van that was on ebay (in the past they went to Texas and Oklahoma to pick up cars from ebay.) They got up there and decided the van had some problems so they stayed up there a day and came home the next, they were about 45 minutes away from home. Maybe people really do have "feelings"
All in all, she will be ok, it is going to be a long recovery but we will get through it. Thanks for all the positive vibes, thoughts, and prayers.

Just got the latest news, they are talking surgery now. She was doing ok but then she started having more pain in the left side of her back so they did more x-rays and it seems as though the fragments from the break is starting to move around. They are probably going to go in and cement things together so they aren't moving around. There were going to send her to a nursing home tomorrow so she could heal a little more before going home but it looks like she will have to stay in the hospital for a while longer now. She is allergic milk and is having a hard time making the dietary department understand that, every meal they send her has some type of milk in it. The main dietician has been in touch with my Mom and she is not happy with how they can't seem to get things right. They sit down and make out a menu that has no milk in it and they send up something completely different.
The other day they gave her cold cereal for breakfast, she again told them no milk so they sent back down for something else and they sent up a milkshake to put on her cereal...when the nurse pointed out NO milk, they said it would be ok because it was only 1% :rolleyes: Maybe by the time she gets out of there, they will have the milk thing figured out...

My SIL had to deal with that for a while, i know it can be frustrating. just know you have lots of wiggles and kisses coming your way...

The hospital finally did get the milk thing figured out, about a day before she left there. She was moved to a nursing home to finish healing and should be home in a few weeks. Now we are going through the milk situation at the nursing home. There they have a menu and have only one alternative meal choice, there have been a few days now that both the regular meal and the alternative contain milk and they can't seem to be able to make her something else. She is closer to where I live now so I have been making frequent trips to see her and I always pick something up on the way for her to eat and I take in various things that she can keep in her room to snack on. I don't understand how the can not have a lactose free meal choice, out of almost 300 full beds, she can't be the only lactose intolerant person.
As far as the rehab goes, she is doing good. They are working on teaching her how to do different things without hurting herself and just doing PT to keep the rest of her strong. I tell her that it seems as though she is enjoying herself too much in a nursing home as she is always up and about playing cards with other residents and visiting others. I also have to remember that she lives in the area and visits this nursing home frequently doing different things for the residents as she is a member of an elderly persons right board thing. Don't know what it is called but she goes to the state capitol once a month for meetings and she is the local rep for the area, making sure the nursing homes are functioning as they should be as far as patient rights go. She also deals with insurance and low income families, making sure they are able to get the care they need. She knows way too many people in the home and the nurses and administrators but she is doing ok.
