It's amazing how they react to bad memories. Buster was rescued from the streets, but obviously was abused by a man wearing a baseball cap. Didn't know til I took him to work the first day and he reacted aggressively towards all the men i work with. It took some time and the guys patience, but he recovered almost 95%. Strange men walking towards us still get him nervous.
The bad histories of these poor dogs can be overcome. It takes lots of patience, persistance and cooperation from every and any one possible. If you can't give 100% of your time to rehabilitate, then that dog isn't the one for you.
For this poor guy to stand at his escape, definitely shows he isn't aggressive, otherwise he would be lunging at you. He is just very confused on how to react in a different atmosphere so he reacts like a scared little man. Poor guy. He needs some rehab quick!
I certainly hope he finds the right household to join in and feel safe. You sound like you could just be the right fit for him if you have the time.
