My Emma is sick

My emma is 7 weeks old and we took her to the vet to get her shots. About 2 hours later she woke up from taking a little nap and her eyes were so puffed up that she cold barely open them and the whites of her eyes were red...BOTH OF THEM!!! Then we immeadiately called the vet's office and since they were closed we had to take her to the emergency room. When we arrived there he jowls were all swollen as well and her eyes had gotten much worse. It was also affecting her breathing. They immediately took her temp and she had a fever. She was having a reaction to her shots. As she is my first puppy I was terrified. The vet's office knew that i had never had a puppy before and didnt even so much as warn me that the shots may cause her to have a reaction. So right now i am not very pleased with them :mad: They emergency vet gave her a steroid shot and some benedryl. We kept her there for about an hour and a half and she slowly got better. We have to give her steroids and benedryl for three more days. And she was lathargic when we brought her in she is feeling better now, cuz she is back to her growling and biting at my feet lol!! I just hope that this doesnt happen every time that she goes to the vet. Has anyone had any similar experiences with their pups????? Please offer some help ....thanks:cool:

A lot of dogs have reactions to vaccinations - some can even die.

I use a very minimal vaccination protocol on my kids - we first do tests (called a titre) to see if they have antibodies, and then we only vaccinate if they don't have immunity. And we only vaccinate against life-threatening illnesses (parvo and distemper). There's just no point vaccinating against kennel cough and some of the others that get dumped into the cocktail shots that most vets like to give.

Titres are becoming more routine, and are accepted in lieu of vaccination proof for many classes, day cares, and kennels.

Do a search about limited vaccinations, and you will learn a lot!

Sorry to hear about Emma - hope she feels better soon!!

What a frightening experience. It's a good thing you got her treatment right away. An allergic reaction is something you can't fool around with.

I'm glad Emma is doing well. I'll bet she got over it quicker than Mommy.
