Hello All,

My Jasper is driving me nuts. If anyone else has this problem I would love to hear from them. Jasper whines all the time. I could just bring him out to the bathroom and when we come in he is whinning. So I know he dosn't have to go to the bathroom. He will just sit there stare at me and whine. We just came back from the vet and he is fine there is nothing wrong with him. I think he is whinning for attention. But he gets tons of attention. He can't be close enough he can be sitting on you and whine to be closer. He is a year and three months. He is driving me nuts!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Since you said (a) that you give your little guy lots of love and attention and (b) that a vet has assured you that there is nothing physically wrong with him, I'd say his whining is a behavior issue.

My boxer, Bishop, is about the same age as your dog, and although he does not whine excessively, he does have a habit of dropping his head on my lap when he wants attention (which, I know, is probably less annoying than constant whining, but I think the underlying cause is the same). I have repeatedly read on this site that such behavior may be your dog's attempt to get attention from you on his terms-- when HE wants it. Any type of response to or acknowledgment of this behavior actually reinforces it because whether your scold the dog or pet him, his goal is still met-- he has received some type of attention. Several of the moderators and members on this site recommend just ignoring your dog when he does such things, and I must admit, the advice is perfect! Since I began trying the "just ignore him" tactic, Bishop is much less apt to constantly come over and put his head on me and if he does do it, he quickly realizes that I'm not going for it and will go lay down or find a toy.

Try the ignoring approach (assuming you already haven't) and let us know how it goes. In the meantime, get a good pair of ear plugs (just kidding). Good luck!

I can relate. Brogan whines too. She is only 4 months now so i'm hoping she will grow out of it. She whines for attention though or when she is bored. She too gets tons of attention and if for a second she wants to play and I don't, the whining starts. Especially when I am getting ready for work. She puts her head down and gives me those sad eyes and whines.
The first time it was so cute.. Now I just ignore it. I don't make eye contact or anything. I just go about my business, eventually she stops. I think if you keep ignoring Jasper he will stop soon enough as well. I'm no expert though so I'm curious to what others have say.

I almost posted this samething! Clarice is 1 year old and she whines ALL the time! She will whine and give out several huffs and then just lay down. She has tons of toys, is healthy, isn't hungry and doesn't need to go out...just whining. I think her's must be a behavior thing. I think we might have started it by talking back to her when she whined. She will even do it if I am not in the room though. I guess she knows I can hear her and I will see what she is doing. I would hate to think she is unhappy but she is so spoiled and her tail is normally going nuts (when she isn't whining).

Thank You everyone for such fast responses to my situation. I am going to try and ignore Jasper, I tried that before and it worked for awhile but he is persistent and he wore me down. But not this time because his whining is driving me nuts. He has tons of toys and plenty of love so we will see how this works out. He will be getting a brother in a few days, a bulldog so maybe they will keep each other occupied, In any event I love my boys no matter how much they aggrivate. Thanks Again!

Jed does this too, he sooks all the time  He sooks when Hannah is sleeping on his back and he feels squashed, he sooks when he is sitting to close to the heater and his eyes are burning  But he never moves , he just sooks...........he does the same sook when he wants attention or when we have been scratching him then stop and sometimes for no reason that we can see.

Usually we just laugh about it and just put him down to a big sook. He's 5 yrs old now, I can't remember when he stared doing it. I see it as just his way of communicating with us.

Tiger used to do the same thing. It would aggrevate me to no end! smashicon We would walk him, play with him, take him to the park and let him play with the other dogs, come home and still whine!

He did this up until he was a little over a year. That is when we got Boxer #2, Riley. Since then he no longer whines. Looking back I think he did it out of boredom -although we tried to keep him from being bored, it was never enough. Now that he has a brother to pick on and keep him occupied, the only time he cries is for food and potty time!

My advise......get a new sibling! :D

Oh the whinning. I don't think they feel they ever get enough attention......lol At 8 years Lacey whines to let me know when it's bed time or if she wants me to go sit outside with her. I guess they have to have some way to try and communicate with us. If she's bugging me too much I'll just tell her to go lay down. At this point in time she doesn't bother me that much, she's such a sweety.

Well my spoiled boxer Hayee, drives me crazy! I know there is nothing wrong with her. She gets plenty of attention but lately she just doesn't want to be away from me. The minute I get home if she's outside she will not stop pounding on the sliding glass door.(she's so cute) Even after I go outside and play with her and Sunshine. She won't stop. She spends most of her time inside with us. She sleeps with me, So she gets plenty of attention. After 2 years I came to the conclusion. She's spoiled rotten! queenicon

Does anyone have any advice? Considering Haylee is very hyper I just try to ignore her when she's acting out but she barks really loud too!
No matter what she's still my babyangelicon

I have to say Monty wines alot too...but mostly he SOBS

Most mornings I'm woken up by sobbing at my bed side....It's not a whine....literally a pure sob...sob...sob...sound. Boxers are the only breed I've ever heard do this.

If I'm not quick enough to take him out....the sobbing quickly escalates into a throwing back of the head and wooooo.....wooooooooing........eventually slowing down to a mummmm...maama...sound....Which is why My Monty can say Mama.

When he wants something....I usually say...."say Mama"....he sobs about abit....but then eventually says ammammma.....I just love him to bits.
