I stop as soon as Joe walks out ahead and the leash begins to tighten. Now he knows that as soon as the leash is tight, he has to come back to my side (I also always say "loose leash Joe" as soon as he startsto pull, and now he know this means he's too far ahead)

I am in the process of teaching my 18 month old Harry the "stop method". I got him when he was about a year and his previous owner never used a lease on him except to take him to the vet. We go running every morning and I have to have him on a leash so I had to teach him the basics about being on a leash. It is very tedious but is working.
We are trying the gentle leader and it is very interesting. Once I put it on him he starts shaking his head, almost like he is head banging like he is in a heavy metal band. Once he does this for a minute he stops and then refuses to go outside. This is going to take some time as well.

I have heard of this and wasn't exactly sure of how to implement it, like Grimmja mentioned. Mason seems to be acting out the last few weeks and pulling like crazy. This is a new behavior for him and I want to nip it in the bud immediately. I tried this on our walk today and Mason wasn't doing very well with it. Looks like we have a lot of work cut out for us. I'm going to start in our back yard before working with him on walks and in any other distractive setting. Thanks for the tips...

Adam is a hugo puller especially if someone is approaching us! The stop method is beginning to work! Yeah!! When Adam pulls, I stop and tell him "sit". He's sitting reliably now even in this circumstance :D If he trys to get up, I tell him "no" and he will sit still. If its another animal approaching us, i usually have to tell him "settle" in a very firm voice and he knows I mean business!! The "sit" "settle" commands also are working inside the house when someone comes to visit. Adam has to "settle" before he's allowed to say hello. He's now saying hello quite nicely now :)

theyre too excited.

hi I have a 10 week old and I read the advise on the stopping the walk. It worked. By the time (an hour later) we were coming back she had stoped pulling and she waited for me. We tried again this morning and she did fine until she saw people. Then she went carazy. she thinks every one wants to pat her. too cute. I tried to stop but she was too excited. For being a puppy its not bad.
