Maybe I'm lucky, but I haven't needed anything to keep Porter from pulling. Just took some training. Granted that's as long as there are no squirrels or frogs around for him to chase. :) When I started walking him I kept the collar up pretty high on his neck so he wouldn't pull...and he got so used to it that now he walks right next to me with slack in the lead. He knows heel well now too.

The stop method works. I've used it on all 3 of my dogs and they walk beautifully with me at all times. All it takes if they get a bit anxious and to the end of the leash is an "easy" command from me and they immediately slow to my pace.

It takes time and patience but, it sure is better than having your arm pulled out of the socket. Try it and be consistent and pesistent and you'll soon have dogs who are the walking envy of most other owners (who eventually give up and let the dog run on an extended flexi-lead, or end up not walking with the dog at all).

Good luck.

I must vote for the stop method. But I must say, it takes awhile. Or it took awhile with my Krose

Joe is really starting to do well with the stop method. It was painful for a while, but now as soon as he feel s the tug, he looks back at me and gets a click(we also use clicker training...just a noise that means a treats coming). He even does this at the dog park now! Of course we still get some pulling, but consistency is crucial with this method. You can never let your puppy get rewarded for pulling...it's like starting again.

The stop method definitely works! Herkie likes to pull to get somewhere faster...or if he's getting ready to meet someone. I've started working with the stop method....we haven't perfected it yet, but it does work. Hopefully we'll have it down to a science one day! Good Luck!

I'm also working on the stop method for pulling...but I feel like I"m not doing it right, is it ok if the leash is taut but not being pulled? or at the first sign my arm comes out from the side of my body do I stop? I don't know how much I "should" tolerate and in the meantime don't want to confuse the daylights out of my dog!

This sounds pretty simple, I don't know why I'm having such a difficult time with it! I just want to be consistent and realistic.

From my understanding, the dog should learn to walk on a loose leash. If the leash is taut, the dog is only another step or two away from starting to pull. I would say as soon as the leash becomes taut, stop. If you do this, it will prevent any pulling because the dog can never get to the point of pulling.
