Emma's potty problems continue...

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who offered advice and their own experiences. I guess I am at a loss. We seem to now have a new problem. (In addition to the poop eating - she still does that when she can get away with it). Emma has taken to doing her business anywhere she feels like in the house and at odd intervals (for example, I could take her out after her meal, she does her business and half an hour later, we find a mess). Sometimes I wonder, how often she has to poop???

Update: We no longer let her roam free in the basement when we are at work! The house was starting to smell bad! Unfortunately, she is now in her cage while we are at work. This makes for a long day for her in her cage but atleast she doesn't make a mess in her cage. (except 2 times and that I think was because I left her treats that were too new). We have started adding a medley of shaved carrots, broccoli and celery to her food. The idea being that some raw veggies should help her digest the rest of the food better. (Any feedback on this would be most welcome).

What I would like to know is, "at what age would she not have to 'go' as often?" I hate leaving her in her cage all day but I also can't have her turn the house into one big loo.

well Cinnamon is 14 weeks now, and she just started pooping regularily about 2 weeks or so ago. I know how you feel though, when she was a puppy it was like every half hour she pooped.

I think crating will help the frequency of her pooping. Hopefully she doesn't like to mess where she eats. I feel for you. My late cocker spanies, Daphanie, did the same thing. She was picky about when she did it. She'd only eat it if sat awhile and crusted over - YUCK!!!! I tried all the tricks as well...none of them worked. The only fool proof way to keep her from doing it was to keep it picked up or not let her near the old stuff. When she first started eating poop it was the new puppy Jasmine (Boxer). Then when I would walk her in a different part of the yard that is when she started eating her own.

I think you may have a behavioral issue here. Especially since she is now pooping in the house. Was Emma ever scolded for pooping when she was younger??? Was her face ever rubbed in her poop during training??? I have heard that many animals that are trained, when they are puppies, by rubbing their face in their feces causes them to eat their own feces. After this was found out, training a puppy by rubbing its face in its poop was not an acceptable way to train. Emma sounds like she is feeling guilty about pooping outside, so she is essentially cleaning up the mess. For some reason now, stress is causing her to poop inside, why, it is really hard to know. The best thing to do is keep her in her crate when you are not home. Then when you let her outside, bring her inside after she poops, and clean up the feces in the yard. Right now I have problems with 2 animals, Betty, a young kitten, and Rocky, a 2 year old boxer. Betty suddenly does not use the litter box, and Rocky is getting so he poops inside. Yes, the house does get stinky, doesn't it??? I have never had my dogs eat their own poop, but they sure love cat poop, rabbit poop, and peacock poop. Gross!!!! Right now I am keeping Rocky crated, and reinforcing Betty to either go outside or use the litter box. Hopefully Emma will grow out of it, providing you crate her, and clean up any feces in the yard.
