During our morning walk a woman stopped and asked to pet Luke. I said sure and put him in a sit. She reached down to pet his chest, (under his chin). Naturally his head down followed to sniff her hand. She started asking me questions, I looked up to her face and Luke jumped back! I looked at him and he went right back to a sit, and the woman tried to pet him again... when I noticed a cigarette in her hand. The one she was trying to pet him with!
Luke is allergic to smoke. He jumped back as she reached out the second time. I told her that my dog doesn't smoke, and please do not put the cigarette in his face. She huffed at me and made a comment and walked away. I checked him out and sure enough, there's a small burn under his chin. Obviously he hit the lit tip when he tried to sniff her hand.
I feel soooo bad! I didn't notice the cigarette until he jumped. I'll watch much more closely now when people want to be "friendly". I hope he doesn't develope a fear now, he's been going thru the fear imprint period as it is.
