We are expecting our second boxer (Copper 10 weeks) this Thursday!!!

We are very excited. We decided to set up his crate early so that our 2 year old male, Cole, could get used to the second crate being next to his.

I put the puppies "baby" in the crate and Cole has taught himself to open the crate and get the "baby"toy out.

Cole has the run of the house when we are gone, but the puppy will not and will be crated. We are concerned that now that Cole can open his crate from the outside that he will attempt to break Copper out of Jail.

Have any of your boxers done this? Freed a puppy brother from his crate? What can I do to secure the crate without endangering my puppy?

Thanks!
Jody

I never crated my boxer baby. I used a play pen, and then when she could climb out of that, she got to sleep in my bed. However, I do have a suggestion............how about a combination lock, or turning the crate with the opening facing a wall. I wish you luck with your new furbaby. Congradulations!!partyicon

I am always worried about in the case of a fire. We live in a 100 year old house and the danger of electrical fire is more real than it should be. Is there something I can use that doesn't lock in case a fire fighter or someone without a key or combo could get it open? Just not a canine.

Cole has gotten really determined with getting it open so i removed the toys inside. stupid mommysmashicon

I am just thinking that putting a crying pup in there and cole will let himout.

Actually, Vixen broke herself out of her crate one early morning (at about 2 1/2 months old). I awoke to some scratching noises and found toilet paper all around the second floor.

Perhaps there is a way for you to secure the door without a lock. Would a garbage bag twist-tie work? or how about a plastic zip ties from your local hardware store? I am sure that any kind of fastener, like a belt or piece of velcro strip might make it harder for an "escape" . Good luck!

you could use a bolt snap (or something similar) to keep it closed. They're easy to open if you need to get the pup out in a hurry, but are boxer-proof (well as much as anything can be!). You can get them at most hardware stores for a couple of bucks.

Congrats on the new boxer. Mailani broke herself out of her kennel one time. I would turn it around or put one of the bolt snaps. I turned hers around.

Now, I'm trying to figure how to keep her from opening the front door.

Can't say I've ever had this problem...Dexter is soooo spoiled. However I think that the velcro is a great idea. That and along with turning the opening towards the wall would be just fine!

What a smart boy you've got!
A cabinet lock used around toddlers might to the trick..if Cole doesn't chew it up LOL

By the way...love the name for your new lil baby...my boy is Copper too :)

Cheers,
