My Boxer Almost Died Yesterday (Warning about collars)

So glad you were able to save Drago!! How scary that must have been. I never leave collars onmy dogs either unless we are leaving the house. My two would srangle themsevles for sure if I left them on. Thanks for posting about your scary experience, it may sae another boxer's life.

OMG!!! Thanks heavens your baby is ok...This does it for me too...i need no more convincing...i am simply going to attach the collars to the leashes and that's it!! No more collars at all. Mine love to pull each others off of their heads to begin with... Thanks for your post! Going to take collars off now!

Something very similiar to this happened at the dog park where I usually take Cosworth.
One of his best play buddies, a Black and Tan Coonhound ironically also named Sadie, has a thing for grabbing onto other dogs collars. She got tangled up in a very similiar fashion with another dog.
I used to get slightly annoyed at some of the other people that would take their dogs collars off at the park (fensed) as it takes away the one good place to grab on to them if they get into a tussle. However I now take Cosworth's off as well.

My baby got her collar caught on the wrought iron swirly piece of my kitchen chair and she went into a frantic fit of jumping around and was scared to death. This jumping around caused the chair to fall on her and she then started to run with the chair on top of her. I got her calmed down and then took the collar off to unhook her from the chair. I would hate to think what might have happened had I not been at home. :(

Poor Draco! I have heard about this happening so many times before. Those breakaway collars are supposed to be fabulous. Hugs to Draco 
And when using a collar, make sure not to make it TOO loose. Years ago one of my Boxers was able to get their jaw under the collar and it wrench their jaw open. It took a minute to get them to stop thrashing so I could figure out what was wrong and unsnap their collar. I was terrified because they could have broken their jaw or done some type of damage.
Of course, with a Boxer, if there is a way to get into trouble - they will always find it.
And when using a collar, make sure not to make it TOO loose. Years ago one of my Boxers was able to get their jaw under the collar and it wrench their jaw open. First I'd like to say I am so happy to hear your baby is doing better. I know you were thanking your lucky stars that you were able to get that collar off.
What I worry about most about not putting collars on my dogs is if they ever got out for some reason. I do have them all microchipped, but without tags no one would know unless they were kind enough to run them by the vet or animal shelter.
As a matter of fact, about 5 months ago, my husband was on his way home from work and there were two boxers standing in the middle of a busy road. They almost where hit by cars. He stopped and hollard for the boxers. Got to love them, but both came charging to the truck and jumped in like they had been there before. They had no collars and no tags. Hubby drove around in area subdivisions for hours waiting to see someone post a sign or even looking for their dogs. He ended up bringing them home. The next day I took them down to my vets office to scan for microchips...no microchip. After leaving a message with the area animal control finally we were contacted by the owner.
I actually have the chain collars only because any other collars (leather and nylon) is chewed off by the other one. One time I came home and all I found in the cage was the buckle with tags attached. They ate the whole thing. Just so I don't get blasted for using chokers I want to say they are only for tags. When we take them for walks we use the gentle leaders.

Your dogs probably don't need tags on them when they are in their crates and the chain collars left on dogs unattended are even worse than regular collars. I don't see a need for chain collars or tags on a dog left in a crate, but I don't know all the circumstances. Just seems dangerous.

MY 2 boxers actually had this happen to them also!!!! They were playing and their collars became tangled and bedlam broke loose--as my boyfriend tried to disengage them the melee got worse as they were struggling for air! My BF was yelling get me something to cut this with(we were in kitchen)in my panic I pulled a butcher knife(stupid I should have grabbed a scissor but I was in a panic!)Just as he started to work it they untangled the collars--what a relief...I started to cry .....
We NEVER leave their collars on now---they only get put on when we go for a walk!! If you have 2 at home and you are away you just never know.
I am so glad Drago is ok....I know how scared you were....
