Yesterday we took Vincent in for his 16wk shots and found out that he still has a heart murmur. When we took him in at 12wks the vet found it and said that he may grow out of it. Which I have read that alot of puppies have this and do grow out of it. Well, Vincent didn't, the vet said that it was about a grade 2 1/2 out of 6. Everything else looks great he said, but I'm still so sad for him. Our vet gave us the signs to look for in case things start to go bad like shortness of breath, tiring easily and just not acting like a typical boxer :D. I know that people can live long healthy lives with a murmur but, how well do dogs do? Also, he's going to be neutered in 6wks, is putting him under going to affect his condition? That really scares me. He's my calm little sweetheart, his sisters are the little evil ones ;). Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I would ask for a referral to a cardiologist. It may cost a little money, but it would be worth it for piece of mind. Most regular vets are not good at determining the grade of a heart murmur. It would be worth while getting an expert opinion. I would want it done before he was neutered.

Good luck!

Its possible he may still grow out of it. The first time the vet heard Cortes's murmur he was about 12 weeks and then at around the 5/6 month marke when I was getting ready to get him neutered they couldn't hear it anymore. Even if he doesn't outgrow it, I know other dogs who have lived full, healthy lives with a murmur. Good luck.

Sorry To Hear About The Baby, But Yes Please Check Into The Anesthesia Issue, One Of My Dogs Had A Puppy That Had Murmur When He Was Born And The Vet Was Quick To Tell Us That Is A Touchy Issue, And Recently My Full Grown Healthy As An Ox Dog Had To Have Emergency Surgery And They Gave Him Ekg Prior To It, To Determine What If Any Problems He May Have To Determine The Type Of Anesthesia They Would Use...this From A Doctor Who Has Been Doing Surgery For Over 30 Years...told Us You Can Never Be To Safe...especially Where Our Pets Are Concerned..good Luck

Putting your baby under is danderous if he has a heart murmur. I took my Maia last week to go get her spayed and the vet called me and said she wouldn't be able to perform the surgery because of her murmur. She said it was too much of a risk to put her under. Maia is only eight months old but her murmur is only getting worse and more profound. I am taking Maia to see a Cardiologist next week. We will let you know how things turn out. We wish you the best of luck.

Thanks Jodie for leting me know that. I'm sorry about your baby, please do let us know how everything went, you're in our prayers. At what age did you find out she had the murmur? I'm hoping and praying like Sabrina said, that he still may grow out of it. Well, good luck next week, keep us posted. Also, thank you to everyone who expressed their thoughts and concerns.
