Boxer Pal
Hey everyone. I just thought I let yall know how close I came to losing one of my sweet girls a couple of weeks ago.
I was comeing home from the store on saturday when I saw two labs running through my neighborhood. I totally belive in karma so I always pick up dogs that have gotten away from their owners. So i took the two sweet dogs home and put them in the back yard. Luckily one of them had a ph # on his tag so I called his owner to come get them. Now, my girls, Gretchen and Emma, where in the house going nuts because there were two strange dogs in their back yard. Well the owner showed up and I led her dogs through my gate to the front yard. The owner told me that the dogs had gotten away from her on a walk and she just let them go because she was mad at them for chewing up a pillow earlier in the day. I really had to bite me tounge. I just kept my mouth shut and gave her her dogs. AFter they left I locked the gate and let my girls out in the back yard. Well my brindle, Gretchen, was hell bent on finding out where those dogs went. She ran full speed and hit the gate with all her force. The gate's lock busted and both girls ran out at full speed. I ran out the gate and called for them but they were no longer visible and I didn't know which way they went. I got in my truck to try and find them. Turns out they sprinted at full speed all the way up the main road in my neighborhood to the busy four lane road.
Now I didn't think they would leave the neighborhood so I drove around the streets for about 15 min. Then I went back home and there was a message on my machine. It was the vet hospital at the intersection at the entrance of my neighborhood. All it said was that Emma, my fawn boxer, had been hit and I need to call them. I could barely breath. I ran to my truck and drove strait there. I was in a total panic. When I pulled up I saw a Nissan sentra parked out front with the front end completely smashed. I thought I was going to faint. I thought for sure she was dead. I ran in and they directed me to an exam room where the vet was talking to the man that hit her. When I went in her collar was on the table. I asked if she was dead and the vet said no, but she needed immediate attention and I needed to sign off on any possible expenses. I signed a form that said that I would pay for all expenses even though she could die. After I signed and the vet went to the back I totally lost it. The man who hit her was very kind. He said that my other girl, Gretchen, got spooked and ran away from my neighborhood. I thought I was going to lose both my girls for sure and could not contemplate how I would ever recover emotionally.
For the next hour I sat in the waiting room balling my eyes out. The man who hit her had his whole family there and they did their best to confort me. Finally they called me back. Emma was alive. She had a collapsed lung and internal brusing, but she was alive.
By some miracle she didn't break a single bone! She broke the car, but it didn't break her. They had done a procedure to re-inflate her lung and she was still very unstable. I was going to have to take her to a weekend hospital where she could get 24 hour care. I had to wait while they prepped her.
While I waited the vet tech up front got a call. A women who had been there earlier and heard about Emma getting hit and Gretchen running off told her husband to drive around and look for gretchen. He had spotted her in the neighborhood but had lost track of her. I got in my truck and drove home. There she was sitting in the driveway shaking like a leaf. I jumped out of the truck and broke down again. I hugged her and cried.
It's been two weeks since the accident and Emma's recovery is nothing short of a miricle. She is completely recovered. It was touch and go the first night in the hospital. Her lung collapsed two more times. But she is absolutely perfect now. Her and Gretchen are back to being my bad little girls. I replaced all the old hardware on the fences so they are locked down like fort knox. I've been spoiling them totally and completely. They got new beds and new toys. I got them all kinds of great bones and treats. And I spent at least an hour every day lying on the floor with them just snuggling.
Thank God for all the wonderful people who helped Emma survive. From the kind man and his family who, with out thinking carried her to the vet after hitting her, to the vet for saving her life.
Never take your pets for granted. In an instant they could be gone. And do me a favor and double check those gates tonight.

! How dare she say she didn't look for her babies because they tore up a pillow!!! Next time it could very well be her babies fighting for their lives! Just how much was that pillow worth anyway??
