Cancer/leukemia - Rocky and Kiddo

Rocky and Kiddo Moms -
I just joined yesterday in hopes of researching about cancer and leukemia. I'm so sorry for everyone going through this and can understand what you all are going through as I just learned on Friday that my precious Leftover - 8yrs old - has either cancer or leukemia. We went to the vet for a routine dental/tooth pulling and I got a phone call about an hour later saying that her bloodwork came back bad - was swimming with lymphocytes - and they didn't want to do the surgery. She has no swollen lymph glands, has certainly not lost any weight, still quite bouncy and a very very healthy appetite. Needless to say I was in shock - as I've always had health problems with my white boxer, Susie - and never Leftover. So, the bloodwork has been sent to a lab and we're waiting for a referral to the oncologist to see what our options are. My heart and prayers go out to you as you go through this - but it's comforting to know I'm not alone in this.

Welcome Amy...We all know what you are going thru and believe me it's not easy. My eight yr old Rocky had fractured his leg in Dec 04 and then this yr at Christmas time I noticed he was limping thought he had fractured or maybe just artheritis when my vet said cancer my heart leaped out...I hate that word. If you read the post you will see great people who have been thru this or going thru it now like Wanda, Donna, Melanie, Laurie....and many others who offer support and prayers someone is always around when you have a question or just need to cry. I just hoped that someday I could help someone like yourself like they have helped and supported me. Boxers are such a special breed we all agree on that and they are loved so much by their owners...they are such givers and they steal our hearts away right from the start...yes I cry alot but I am never alone other cry with you and for you....I am only a post away hang in there and you will be in our prayers...Rocky & Mom

Hi Vicky, I've been away and very busy the last few days, but I wanted to say hello and I hope all is well. You are never far from our prayers.

And Amy, my gosh, I can only imagine how that phone call from the vet must have felt. We're with you too. I'm hoping for good results on Leftovers blood work, that things can be treated for him.

HUGS to all!

It's Leukemia

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all the warm kind words and support. Got the definitive diagnosis on Leftover and it's chronic lymphocystic leukemia - my heart won't stop pounding. Lefty doesn't even know she's sick -she was rough housing and barking at me for attention last night - same funny face clown as always. Unbeknownst to me, she's learned how to open the dog biscuit box and help herself...so when I got home there were a ton of biscuits in her bed and the new box was half empty - later I saw her wander into the kitchen, nose open the box and select the prize biscuit - amble back to her bed to enjoy it. In a matter of an hour she had taught my deaf boxer Suzie, how to do it. It's almost surreal to know she's ill. But isn't it amazing at 8 they are still so quick to learn?!?!

We have an appointment with the oncologist a week from today. My vet says it may be too early to even treat it, because if you treat too early the disease doesn't respond. Have you all heard that before? Anyway, she's going to have more tests run and hopefully develop a plan of action. I'm also considering getting a second opinion from the Univ of Tenn Veterinary School that has a cancer center - I work in higher education so I think I get a discount even though it's 6 hours away - I'm hoping to fax them the test results and get the second opinion and go from there.

I'm saying prayers for all our babies..and when I hug my own I'm hugging yours as well.
Amy
