Emma's Mommy

Boxer Buddy
We just moved into a new apartment this weekend and Emma is not happy about it. She's not eating much, she's having potty accidents all over the place, and will not play with her toys. She won't leave my or DHs side. And to add insult to injury, it is pouring down rain here and Emma hates going out in the rain, so I can't get her to potty outside. I'm worried about Emma and am not sure what to do to make her feel better. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Well about all you can do it wait it out. She will adjust but it takes time. She is just in unfamiliar territory and it doesn't feel like home to her yet. Give her a little time it'll get better.

The wonderful thing I have learned about my animals is that, once an animal is loved and trusts you - they are very adaptable...It may take time, but she'll come around! I've moved several times with my animals - and they always take a few days to adjust, but once they do, it's like they've been there all their lives.

Emma is adorable BTW, she'll do fine! Just keep lovin on her, she'll adapt in no time :D Good luck :D

Sorry to hear it hasn't been a smooth transition!
I got my puppy in Oregon and it was raining while we were potty training--Gracie did not want to go out in the rain to potty either. She tried to stand on my feet to avoid getting her paws wet on the wet ground! It may help Emma if you get here a sweater or jacket, and then also go out and hold an umbrella over her. Sounds crazy to be holding an umbrella over a puppy, but it worked for us :)
Have you crate trained her? If so, you may have to go back to using the crate more for a little to prevent accidents while while she gets used to the new house.
Try not to worry, and I hope she starts to feel good in her new home soon!

Time will make her more comfortable. Just continue with as much of a routine as possible with her and she'll catch on before you know it!

local SPCA

I would talk with your local SPCA they're usualyl really helpful with things like this. Their website also has a lot of good information.

We are actually going to move in less than a year. I'm not selling any of our crappy old furniture yet because they say that it is important to have your old furniture all over the new place to make sure they have familiar smells.
Set their food in the same room that it was in the old place. Like the kitchen so they're used to seeing the fridge, table , stove, food smells etc.
Have them away during the moving process so they won't get as stressed out seeing you pack everything up cause it's confusing etc. (but you're passed all that stuff so I dunno)

I'm going to talk w/ the local SPCA people and find a vet down there prior to moving. that way they will have the best tips and know what is happening etc. before we even get down there. (I'm a little bit of a planner and preparation nut) haha

Some success!

Thanks so much everybody for your support and advice. On the good news front, since I posted this morning Emma has gone potty outside x3 (YEAH!), has started playing with her toys, and is exploring the apartment without us right by her. Now we'll have to see what happens when DH and I go back to work on Wednesday. Emma is crate trained, but she whines quite a bit when we are leaving. Luckily our neighbors own dogs so hopefully they will be understanding when she cries. Cross your fingers for us!

Macon's Mom

Completely Boxer Crazy
Angela, glad to hear Emma is starting to adjust. We moved in August and even though Macon is 2 years old, it was a little bit of an adjustment. She didn't know which door to go to when she wanted to go out, etc. but it didn't take long and she was acting like queen of the place :) Don't worry it will all be fine.
