My poor boy spent the night at my mom's - we had a wedding last night - and this morning, my mom calls me in a panic because Mugsy got stung by a bee in his ear. She said he was shaking his head and rubbing it on the ground. With a lot of treat bribing, they were able to get the stinger out.

I called the animal hospital and they said only bring him in if he starts to become lethargic (sp?) or breaks out in hives. They saw some bumps on the top of his head and my dad felt that he should be looked at. I was in such a panic! I met them at the hospital and by the time my dad arrived, Mugsy's eyes were almost swollen shut, his lips and jowls were swollen and his face was bleeding a little from scratching it on the way out. Because Mugsy was in the back seat, my dad didn't notice the swelling or bleeding.

My poor boy looked like he had been a huge rough scrap with a bigger dog! Thank goodness for benadryl! The doctor gave him a shot and within an hour of waiting, his swelling started to decrease. His poor ear is still swollen, but everything else is fine. I felt so bad. He sat on my lap the entire time we were at the hospital. Now that I know he;s allergic, I'll probably be in a panic everytime I see a bee near him!

Layla had a reaction to a bite a few weeks ago and blew up too. It is so horrible to see them looking like that and all itchy...I hope Mugsy stays away from those mean bees!

This has happened to Buster several times. He gets so miserable and it just makes me cry with him. I have learned to keep benedryl on hand at all times, this seems to help head things off before they get too out of control.

Hope Mugsy is back to 100% really soon - we're sending positive vibes your way ~~~~~~~~!!!!!

this has also happened to my male chance, only he got bit by a deer fly at the cottage - his face blew up to twice the size and his eyes swelled almost shut by the time we got to a vet in town!
I also always keep benadryl in my purse as well as some other flavoured allergy tablets the vet gave me. it is soo scary at first though.

regular benadyl works.
chance was prescribed" 6 - 25 mg pills when hives occur"
he weighs 73 pounds...the vet says that dogs have a much higher tolerence for allergy meds so they require quite a high dose.
he also takes 3 a day during allergy season as prescribed

I am definately not a vet, but when Wilma was stung by a bee (she actually ate it) she too blew up like a cartoon character. My vet always says 1mg Benadryl for every lb. I know that seems like alot. I keep Bendadryl Fastmelts on hand at all times. I noticed at one point there was a picture in the "funny picture" galleryof a pup with the same reaction.

Good luck next time and be prepared!
