It really has been awhile since I have had time at my computer. Welcome to all you new folks! My question is what do I do with Spike while traveling. We will be moving a few thousand klm away and I am concerned about what to do with Spike. Is it safe to give him something to sleep? He does love drives BUT hey this is no 2 hour trip. Any ideas????? Also how are Boxers with adjusting to such a big change? This makes me just a wee bit nervous. Spike loves his routine...he really seems to freak out when our routine changes. At christmas he lost alot of weight when he was babysat far a couple of days.:(

I currently live in texas and I traveled to florida with 2 boxers, one was 5, the other a little over a year. The first hour they were all excited, but after that it was sleep city. Once they realized it was a longer trip than usual they settled down great. The longest they had traveled prior to that was maybe an hour. Acually I came back with my 2 step daughters (6 and 8) and the 2 dogs and the dogs traveled better than they did. I just made sure that they had somewhere they could lay down and see out and they were fine. Stopped every 3 or so hours, less at night. As for moving, did that too, they were more excited than me. They may need reassurance initally and you'll need to aquaint them with new surroundings but just so long as they knew we were with them, they were fine. Whats worse is packing up and leaving without them. My dogs just know when I or my husband are leaving, and they are really anxious until they realize they are coming too. I dont think you really have to drug them unless they get car sick or dont like to travel in the car. And I didnt put mine in a kennel either. Hope it helps!! I usually found out I worried about nothing.

You don't need to knock out your pet, what you do need to do is lay in a supply of treats, baggies for potty breaks on the road and a couple of gallons of his normal drinking water or perhaps bottled water. This will lessen the possibility of diarrhea developing while you travel. Some dogs even refuse to drink water from some place unfamiliar. Their sense of smell is better than ours and some dogs are very discriminating. I know my guy sure is, we always take water from home when we go places because he usually refuses tap water when it's offered to him. Stop every couple of hours to get out and stretch and walk him around and you should be fine!
Good luck!

With our two boys, we have traveled from Dallas, TX to central MO (11 hrs.) on several occasions, moved from Dallas to Birmingham (10 hrs.) and have traveled from Birmingham to central MO (11 hrs.) several times as well.

"tingoddess" is absolutely right about taking either a milk jug or something filled with the water they are used to drinking or at least some bottled water. You know how sensitive their little tummies are...:D

We don't feed them before we go to avoid upset stomachs. I will warn you though... I hope your windows work well because he will pass some serious gas.:D

The first time we took Omar with us it was quite funny. Omar was standing up where as Magnum laid down right away because he'd been through the trip before. It was like he said, "Ok man, if you want to stand up it's fine with me, but you'll be sorry." After a while Omar figured out that we weren't stopping anytime soon and he laid down too.

Plan on stopping several times to stretch his legs, get a drink of water and use the bathroom. He will travel fine for you. We've even stopped at a dog-friendly hotel for the night before with no problems.
