Anyone out there from Arizona? We are leaving the midwest (Illinois) in November and moving to Arizona. Our boxer loves being outdoors; chasing her frisbee and running around the back yard. The fact that there will be minimal grass (if any) and possibly only stone for her to run on and the hotter temperatures makes me concerned for her well being/happiness. Am I crazy or what? I'm not worried about the two legged members of the family... just our Tillie.

Firstly good luck with the move,probably the best time for walks,etc will be the cooler mornings and evenings.

The only thing I know about Arizona is what I've seen on Animal Planet's Animal Cops Phoenix. They seem to spend a lot on time digging dogs out on drainage pipes after they have gotten stuck. I think Phoenix has pipes that drain the water out and also to bring water in for irrigation.
It does get hot there, over 100 degrees most days in the summer, so the ground will be hot if there is no grass or ground cover. Early morning walk are going to be the way to go.

I lived in az for a lil over a year and as soon as the hubby is out of the military we will be going back! A friend of mine let her boxers sit outside in az and she had a fan on their patio for them to sit under. Alot of people also keep misters outside so that way they can still get fresh air even though its super hot out what area were you moving to? If your moving to phoenix area yes its really hot and the winters are not bad at all like about 70 haha and theres always alot of parks around and they have grass most new communities have parks inside the community itself! There are plenty of happy boxers living in az so i wouldnt worry just make sure your baby has water and can come in when its to hot and specialy during dust storms.

We just moved to Nor. California from Phoenix. Where in AZ are you moving? You'll be surprised at how much grass there is, at least in Phoenix. It is the desert, but it is an entire city living in denial. There are plenty of grassy parks in and near Phoenix, there are several great dog parks-all of which have grass.
The only thing I'd caution you about is that during the summer the lows at night are not always low enough to cool off the concrete. So, even at 6am, some mornings the ground is still too hot for dogs to walk on. You also have to be careful about overheating. Bodie would start panting pretty early in our walks and would take a long time to cool down after we returned home-even when it wasn't "that hot". But in general, he was very happy in Phoenix and did very well.

We live in Southern Nevada (las vegas) and I will tell ya, the boys DEFINITELY have to be watched if you leave them outside in the Summer months. Our kids cannot be outside in the desert in the hotter months, crate them inside, but PLEASE do not leave them outside by themselves for any ammount of time in the hot months. They overheat too quickly and cannot cool themselves back down. Remember, 110 with no humidity is like opening an oven and standing there! I am not exaggerating. I recommend walking in the early am or right before bed if you are a nightowl. But again, it depends on what part of Arizona you are moving to- the deserts are totally different from the mountains.
