Hello to all from western New York. We came to this site as we search for info regarding Boxers. You see, we just recently had to put our 13 year old Brindle Boxer (candy) to sleep due to complications and are very deeply depressed over our loss. Even on her last day here, she wanted to go let our neighbors buddy know of her presence, lol . What a great and loyal companion she was to the end!! On the bright side, we are now in search of another Boxer and just love this site! Any suggestions on what to look for would be greatly appreciated!! Gus;)

How sad to hear about Candy. You must miss her terribly. I sure hope that my boxers can live such a long and happy life.

In looking for a new boxer pup, everyone here will tell you to choose a breeder carefully. I know that some of the signs of a reputable breeder are if they have done health testing on both of the parents for ailments such as hip displaysia and heart defects. Also, normally a good breeder will ask you lots of questions so that they know their pup will grow up in a safe and loving home, and may even have you sign a contract. Look for clean surroundings and plump, healthy pups. It may take a very long time to find the right breeder, so be prepared to be patient.

Once you've found the right breeder, then picking the right pup is another task. The first book I purchased when I started researching boxers was "Boxer: Family Favorite" by Stephanie Abraham (I think). It's a great book, and goes into detail on what to look for in a breeder, and what kind of temperment tests to do in a litter of pups.

You will be taking a risk if you choose to go with a less than reputable breeder - a backyard breeder. People still do this, but there is a much greater risk for health problems, and it just encourages such breeders to keep breeding less than optimal pups, which in turn is not good for the breed as a whole.

Good luck to you, and I can't wait to see pics when you find that perfect little pup!;)

I'm so sorry for your loss.:( I can relate as my family recently had to let go of our Annabelle. Our girl was very old too and had a great life with us. With time we will be able to look back on our memories with our wonderful boxers with smiles rather than tears.

I don't have much advice regarding looking for another boxer except to ask if you have considered rescuing a boxer? There are many wonderful boxers out there that need homes.

Best wishes to you.

Hi Gus

So sorry for your loss

Hi Gus,

I am very sorry for your loss. Just know that candy is romping at the bridge waiting for the day that you will be rejoined.

Breeders- i think chewy's mom covered that very well. Make sure the breeder ask's tons of questions and dont be afraid to ask questions back, also find out the different tests that have been preformed. Do NOT go through a pet store. ALL pet stores go through BYB (backyard breeders) and you take the chance of encountering health issues. My Subi is a product of BYB and there is nothing sadder then seeing the boxer you love most have good and bad days. And the bad days you want to cry along with her because you know she is in pain. I would never trade Subi in for the world, but it makes me DETEST BYB's and want to put them out of business. Education is the key.

Rescue- rescue is awesome, i have worked with the MD rescue for almost a year and it is rewarding. rescue dogs know they have gotten a 2nd chance at a good life. Also knowing that you helped a boxer out is gratifying. Having 2 rescued dogs i feel there is a special connection. Also the nice thing with a rescue is we evaluate the temperment, see if the dog is good with cats and/or other dogs, most are housebroken and crate trained, and they are past the puppy stage.

Good luck in your search!! and BW is a great site for information and meeting new and unique individuals that share a love and passion for boxers just like you!

Welcome!

Super Boxer
Gus,

So sorry to hear about your loss. I can't bear to think of the day when Jewellee goes to the bridge. Fortunately she is just a pup and that shouldn't happen for a long time. But you have my deepest sympathy. As far as looking for another furbaby it depends on what you want. If you want to breed and/or show look for an experienced, responsible breeder who will help you on your way. A good place to find breeders is at a local dog show. The website Info Dog has a search available that will show you the upcoming shows in any state you choose. However, if you want solely a companion why not check into a rescue? There are always good boxers waiting for loving permanent homes. Hope this gives you some food for thought.

Good luck.

Carla :p
