Mounting

Hi everyone:

I'd appreciate some input. Scout is 11 months old, and lately at the dog park she's frequently mounting other dogs, male and female. I understand this is her attempt to establish her place in the "pack," and is normal doggie behavior, but sometimes, she can get carried away and become quite obnoxious. I've seen other owners correct their own dogs who exhibit similar behavior, and I was just wondering what your opinions were...is it best to allow the dogs to do "what comes naturally" among themselves, or should this behavior be discouraged by the owner?

I've been told that they are just trying to prove who is dominate dog. I say leave her alone unless the other dogs owner dslike it.

Maggie does this at times too in the Park. I usually stop her with a simple "Enough" command and she'll stop. I don't get angry with her or discipline her because it IS natural for them. But as some owners get all uptight about it, I feel it is best to stop it. Sometimes I just gently nudge Maggie away from the dog she's mounted and that's the end of it (until the next time).

My males don't mount, only my girls do.
Laci will mount the boys & Mitzi, and Mitzi will only mount the boys. Now you tell me who is my *alpha*? LOL

My Tina does this sometimes too. I don't allow her doing it 'cause 1) I don't want any dirty looks from other dog owners; and 2) this can come into a serious fight if the other dog is not submissive. I have experienced this once when I wasn't too quick to stop Tina. Really, would you like it if other dogs mounted yours? No, I guess, so don't other owners.
Chad -- LOL, but why do you want your boy to mount other dogs? Are you planning breeding him and want to be sure he knows what to do? Or do you just want Mav to look like "a real macho"?

Chad....I know you didn't mean anything by it, but be a little more careful with what you might say. We are a varied group of people here, and I wouldn't want anyone to get their feelings hurt. I have gay friends and relatives, and while you're comment didn't upset me too much, other people may not feel the same. Chad: Sorry if I seemed to jump on your comment. I too know that you didn't mean to be insensitive or to offend anyone. My apologies to you if I inferred any such thing. But, as a gay man, I immediately bristled when I read it because to me, it seemed that you were saying there is something "wrong" with being gay (be it a dog - which I'm not sure really exists in the canine world - or be it a human). I don't want to get into a discussion on homosexual rights here, but I was a little offended by the remark.

I'm sure you were being humorous and again, I apologize for jumping on your comment too harshly. I would only ask that perhaps you think of how someone else might perceive a comment such as that before posting it.

One of the problems with forums and email is that we can't see the person as they are "saying" whatever they are saying and therefore misinterpretations are inevitable. Therefore, I try to be very, very cautious as to what I write and "proof" it several times (spelling doesn't count :D) to make sure that HOW I'm saying what I'm saying isn't going to be misinterpreted by anyone.

Anyway, I hope I haven't caused any hard feelings or anything.

Mounting is dominance related. The alpha dog is trying to show the lesser dog that he is in charge. This is why males mount males and females will mount. Bru tries to mount Amaya about once a day. They are both fixed but Bru wants to be sure Amaya knows that he is top dog around here
