I live in an area that is mosquito heaven. Poor Guinness cannot even go 'outside' without getting bitten 2-3 times. What is the best way to protect him from these pests?

First of all, if he is not on any type of heartworm control such as HeartGard, Interceptor or the like... you'd better get that quick!
To repel them to avoid the sting.... I use the all natural flea repellant from www.cloudstar.com

We've had good luck with adding garlic to Chula's food. Luckily we live in the city and mosquito's aren't really a problem. We use it for the few times a year that we go camping. My brother is allergic to bees and he takes it to help avoid being stung.

Living is Minnesota, Land of 10,000 Lakes, I too have a problem with mosquitos. Our backyard backs up to a wooded swamp/pond area, perfect breeding area for those little buggers. I have tried a number of different sprays, collars and drops. Right know we are using a spray repellent called Pre-Strike and Bio-Spot Flea & Tick Drops (ticks run a muck up here too). It seems to work ok but the best protection I have found so far is to stay out of the woods, keep the dog moving (play fetch) and if he's getting eaten alive, put him in the house. I hate to put him in there but I think it's for his own good.
Like other posters have stated make sure all your dogs are on some kind of heartworm.

Our apt complex feels it necessary to turn on the sprinklers every day, so the landscaped areas in our courtyard are literally a bog. The ground is covered in mildew bc it never dries out. So, mosquitoes swarm by the hundreds out there...
We use Frontline on Farley and it works very well. You can see the mosquitoes fly up to him (he's white so they show up against his fur) and fly away. I have not noticed any bites on him at all.

If you are going to be out doors for a period of time, try using AVON skin so soft on your pup. I use it on Annabell if she is going to be out for a long period of time in the yard. But not all dogs like it. And some people do not like it either. But it works for me and is inexpensive.
