I have a friend who's female does not produce enough milk. She said that in her first litter only 3 nipples had milk and the rest where empty. In her second litter only 1 nipple had milk. What can cause this and is there supplements to help her produce more milk. I had never heard of this before.

She did take her to the vet and they said they did not know why she did not produce enough milk and that they could not find anything wrong with her.

Just because the mother had a problem does not make her a back yard breeder. I talked to my own vet and he said the first time could have been a fluke and there was no problem with trying to breed her a second time and that it probably would never happend again.

She is not going to breed her again she had her spayed and will be keeping her as a pet.

I dont really think the amount of milk a mama has, has anything to do with BYB or responsible breeders...Its just something that happens.
If shes still got the puppies, she can supplement with goat milk, or they have a puppy formula available at walmart, the vets, and at pet stores.

i think if she does not produce milk its mother nature saying don't have puppies, not all female dogs should have puppies......

That can be true..Im a responsible breeder not a byb. of huskies, not boxers, although I own several boxers. what about when breeders have a female with mastitis and have to bottle feed the pups>? Ive known that to happen to several very reputable breeders, breeders on here, and breeders in the show circuit. So is that nature's way of saying for us to spade that dog and she shouldnt have puppies?
Granted this happened twice so yes probably its something with the female, but if that was to happen to one of my huskies Id have her checked by the vet and if he said it was a one time thing and shouldnt happen again, I would probably eventually breed her again. If ithappened twice, then I would spade her.

Oh you are right on that case..I guess I read her question wrong..I thought she was asking about supplements for the puppies! not to make more milk! Yes I agree the friend should have the dog spade otherwise they are risking dying pups and expenses due to lack of milk
