I'm am assuming you are thinking about dipping due to mange. Tucker had a manage outbreak for a few months and we happen to live near a vet school. I was told that mitaban was being taken off the shelves and that while some vets still dipped that the vet school did not...partly because Tucker's case wasn't that bad and the potential hazzards it can cause the dog and the person dipping him (I think they still had mitaban but used it only on extreme cases, with extreme care...for when dogs need relief due to extreme scratching).

We used ivermectin instead, it is a cattle and swine dewormer that is given to dogs with manage orally daily. Sounds odd but is know to treat mange. You need to see a vet to get your dose started right. The only thing is that ivermectin takes time, Tucker was on it for 3 -4 months but is fine now.

Hope that helps-

sashamygirl-
i know i just wrote but then saw your other post... you do need to have the vet do a scrap. With out a scrap you don't know what you are dealing with. Tucker had mange at 5 months, it is common in boxers especially as they go through stages of growing. We knew Tucker would more than likely have mange as it can be genetic.

You could also be seeing a secondary infection. What happens is, mites get into hair folical, dog scratches, hair falls out, dog scratches and then causes a secondary infection with the scratching. Which then you need antibotics. Tucker was given antibotics when he first started on ivermectin b/c the vets knew it could happen.

Sorry to write so long but I remember thinking that Tucker looked terrible but our vets told us that even while on ivermectin he would loose hair for a few months as all the mites died.

i notice you are in west virginia...how far away are you from blacksburg...where virginia tech is? They have a great vet school with a couple of dermotologists on staff and they have a great lab there too. If you aren't too far away I recommend you go there.
You could always call there too b/c they will often times answer questions via the phone. the number is 540-231-4621

Ivermectin

I heard that Mitaban was bad b/c you are basically dipping your dog in a poison (to kill the mites), but then I also heard that ivermectin was bad too b/c it can affect your dogs internal organs such as his/her liver, etc. So how can we win? I took my dog to 3 different vets and they all recommended Mitaban over ivermectin. They both sound awful, don't they?

Mitaban was removed from the market a while ago, maybe a year now. I know many vets stocked up on it, but at this point I'd start to be concerned with expiration dates. If you choose to use it (it is nasty stuff, IMO, a search on the forums will go into a lot more detail), you might want to ask about that.

Wow, I didn't know it was taken off the market a year ago. When Rocco was treated w/ Mitaban for his demodex it was a couple of years ago. He turns 3 in March and hasn't had another episode since. I hope there are many other option now, hopefully Rocco and I won't have to find out what they are. :)

Rowdy was treated with Mitaban for 2 years (mange was recurring due to immune disorder) and the new vet said a lot of his skin problems now are not due to mange anymore bacause he dosnt have it anymore. It's due to all the damage done by the Mitaban dipps the other vet did for so long. Don't know if this helps but it was worth telling since you asked. I hope your baby gets well very soon!:)
