Our boxer is 3 years old, he has never been good in the car. He moves around a lot, we can not get him to sit or lie down. He also barks in our ears constantly. We have tried to distract him with toys, but he will throw them back at us to play with and it is even more distractive for the driver. We usually only take him in the car to take him for a walk, so it is really he should know that he is going to go for a walk when he is in the car. After he has had his walk he will be fine in the car, it is only a problem getting to the desired destination. We have also tried to play with him before getting him in the car so he is excersised in a way before but still doesn't help. We have also try using spray bottle but he actually enjoys the water. Please help with suggestions. Our area is not so great and we really want to be able to take him for a walks in better parks but we can hardly stand this behaviour.

Two suggestions: First either crate him or use a harness/seat belt to keep him still in the car. It is safer for both him, and for the other occupants. An unrestrained dog is no different from an unrestrained passenger in the event of an accident, and from the sound of things, he's likely to be the cause of an accident if you don't 
Second, how about taking him for rides in the car that don't result in a walk. Right now he's beside himself with excitement at the prospect of his walk - if it doesn't always happen then he's likely to calm down some.

Yup- The car harness saved me and Luka! I don't know what I'd do if he didn't ride in the car. He'd only been home w/ me 2 days and we went for a car ride- and he had a seat belt/ harness then.
They work wonders- get one w/ fleese, more comfy. They are very sturdy- I call it Luka's flight suit cause it's looks like he's going sky diving. I can get him into it pretty quickly now.

I use a seatbelt for my dog, Shelby. I think if I didn't she would likely be on my lap while I am driving. She knows now that everytime we get in the car she gets her seatbelt on. She does not mind it at all. I acually think she likes it, I am sure she feels more secure durring stops, etc...

I got a seatbelt/harness for deuce on ebay for about 10 dollars and it has been a lifesaver. Deuce LOVES to climb up on teh arm rest in between driver and passenger. Nearly causes an accident every time. WE got so fed up we bought this.... he tried to chew his way out of it the first time (nearly succeeded) but has accepted his fate now. IT is much safer!
