Hi, I hope this question doesn't make everyone crazy. Is there such a thing as a Minature Boxer? One evening I was surfing around looking at dog ads when I came upon a breeder who was selling Minature Boxer pups, I wish I could remember the site. I found it a bit unbelievable, and if someone is messing with this breeding, should it be allowed? I remember I was in the Boxer Chat room one night, and this man came on and started talking about trying to start a Minature Boxer breed, well we all bashed him good, then he was kicked out. Let me know if any of you have heard such a thing, and what is your opinion of this. Thanks JoAnn

I am positive that there is no such thing as a miniature boxer. We had a "gentleman" in chat the other night insisiting he had to have a miniature boxer, because he loved the breed but they were just too big. We told him to check out the Boston Terriers.

This is the US Boxer Standard for size taken from the AKC website:

"Height--Adult males 221Ú2 to 25 inches; females 21 to 231Ú2 inches at the withers, preferably, males should not be under the minimum nor females over the maximum: however, proper balance and quality in the individual should be of primary importance since there is no size disqualification."

As you can see from the exerpt above taken from the US written standard, there is no size disqualification for the boxer. Does this mean that a smaller sized boxer is guaranteed to do well in the Confirmation ring? Absolutely not. It would be *extremely* hard for an exceedingly small boxer to do well in the show ring, therefore the people that were breeding and selling the pups are probably not showing their dogs in Confirmation. Not to say that no boxer that is over/under standard has ever done well. The dog would just have excell in other areas, thats all.

Advertising them as "miniature" is an entirely different issue, however. There are no "variations" of the boxer breed. (An example of a breed variation can be seen in schnauzers. There are Giant Schnauzers, Standard Schnauzers, and Miniature Schnauzers.) The variations are described in their respective breed standards, and as you can see with the boxer there are no variations. Therefore, the breeder of these mythical "Miniature Boxers" was trying to make a buck, just as the breeders of "rare" white boxers are, which is not right at all IMO.

Since my Roxy is a smaller boxer I had someone ask me if she was a miniture one time. I looked at them and was like "NO! there is no such thing as a miniture boxer". Some pople are so weird. This person had told me that a breeder was going to sell him a "Miniture Boxer". I told him the size of your dog all depends on it's parents and their parents and so on. I said, think about it if you take a male and female that are both on the smaller end of the scale you are going to get smaller puppies. He condinuted to disagree with me. So finally I told him, go ahead pay $200 extra for your "Miniture Boxer". Then I laughed and walked away. :p Some people will do anything to make money these days.

What a coincidence because someone pointed at Clarice last night and said, "Look there is a minature boxer." She looks like a boxer puppy to me!

I've been asked several times if T-bone is a "minature boxer", I just laugh at them. One lady said her neighbor had a minature boxer and she was the same size. She was kinda offended when I told her "no" and that females are generally 10-20lbs smaller. I don't know why she got so stand offish when I told her that. I guess the neighbor had the runt of the litter and told everyone she was a minature.
T-bone is small at 55lbs or so and she seems short too but I never measured her. Everyone else thinks she's still a puppy. . . Then I get offended :)

There was a very nice bitch in my area that finished her Championship and she was just under the standard. She certainly was not a miniature Boxer and neither AKC nor the ABC recognize such a breed. But while she was a bit on the smaller side, she was lovely with the most awesome movement and LOOK AT ME attitude.

Of course someone can take smaller than average Boxers and breed them over and over to try and get tiny Boxers. But in doing so they are not breeding a Boxer true to the accepted breed standard. Like someone said, if you want a mini-Boxer you can look into a Boston Terrier. I happen to adore them and hope to have on in my home next year :)

I agree with the others. Anyone selling "miniature boxers" is just out to make a buck. I doubt the term "miniature" was intended as an adjective to describe their small boxers. :p

I have to relay a story though...
In Remy's puppy obedience class (6 mos. old) there was a boxer that was soooo small. She was cropped already and her entire body was very petite. She didn't have that big feet, puppy look at all.

At the end of the class, I finally asked the woman if there was such a thing as a miniature boxer, because her dog was so small. She was very put off and said she couldn't believe Remy was a purebred boxer because he was such a "monster." And he was only 6 months old!!
We just happened to have 2 boxers at the opposite ends of the spectrum, size-wise.

Another story-
Bailey is almost 2 and is starting to "fill out" a bit. IMO she's not big. I took her recently to an event with lots of people.
One lady said, "look at that little boxer."
Another lady said, "oh, your boxer is so big." :p
Guess it just depends on who you talk to. :D

Linda, The same exact thing happened to us at an all day outing with lots of people! Funny thing is the lady that said how small she was -was still standing there when a passerby said how big she was.
