my boxer didn't have it when i got her from the breeder... so as soon as i went for her second batch of shots i got it done. 55 dollars later i felt a huge relief wash over me, my boxer girl is that much more likely to find her way home if she gets out by mistake.

This guy made a comment to me once about microchips which really hit home. He said that if you ever lost your pet and they were to die and was picked up by the animal control they would notify you and at least you would have some closure instead of contiuing to hope and pray to find your pet. I've heard that not all areas us the same system, so if your pet is has a microchip and gets lost in an area where they use a different system and they find your dog, they won't be able to read the microchip. I've also heard that they are working on creating a system where microchips can be read anywhere.

Avid & Homeagain now provide "universal" scanners that will read eachothers chips, some of the older scanners will not read the chip number, but can will identify the type of chip scanned so whoever is scanning will know a chip is in place and can access the proper scanner. The universal scanner can also read one of the chips used more commonly overseas, but I cannot recall the chip manufacturer right now, sorry--if any of you are active duty military, you may have had this chip or recall the name.

Thanks for the reminder

I just had Rusty chipped and haven't sent in the registration yet. I will be doing that tonight. Cost was $30 at my vet and $15 for registration.

I should have clarified better.

I have a wonderful vet - when we asked about the chip 9 years ago for Jewel she wasn't for it.
It was the breeder who mentioned the chip being able to move.

We will most likely get it done as you can never be too careful.
