Dempsey is chipped with Home Again microchip. I think it is available everywhere. My vet only charged around 40 dollars for it. They insert a chip about the size of a grain of rice in between the shoulder blades. It is as easy as a vaccination. And if they get lost almost every vet and shelter have the equipment to scan the dog and find the owner.

Microchipping is one of the best ways to insure that if your dog is picked up by any animal control agency or turned in by a good samaritan that you will get your dog back before it is adopted out or god forbid, euthanized! You must be sure to keep your contact info updated with the microchip company's recovery service of course. Also, as now almost all vets have universal scanners that will read the two main chips used in the states now, any stray that is brought in can be scanned--which is good in case someone finds your pet and tries keeping it for themselves--if they go to the vet and mention it was a stray, most likely the vet will scan it! It is definitely something to consider. As Dempsey'smama said, it is done by injection, is relatively painless (hurts about as much as a vaccination) and is well worth the cost. I would also call around to your local shelters or lowcost spay/neuter clinics and see if they offer special pricing-many times their chips also include prepaid registration of your recovery info (usually costs about ($13-15). hate to include this, as it is a bit morbid, but when I worked at an emergency clinic in SD, any stray that was picked up as deceased by animal control/disposal was also scanned to find its owner--awful to call someone and tell them their pet is dead, but better than never knowing what happened to them, I suppose....

No doubt its better to know what happened to your pet if you lose it..

We had Tula chipped while she was under for her spay.45$ for chip 18$ for activation.Local county officials want to make chipping manditory like a rabies vaccination. I think their hearts are in the right place but the lowlifes wont follow the rules.

Edit: HomeAgain is the name of our chip

If you want to have it done (both mine are) I would recommend going to your local shelter or humane society. They do it for a great price, usually $20-25. It's a really simple shot between shoulder blades.

Kilbane had his chip put in while he was nuetered, our vet recommended it since it is a bigger bore than a normal needle. It cost $52 for the chip and $17.50 to register. You also receive a tag that can go on his collar.

You know, this reminds me. I know Bruno was microchipped at the shelter when I got him, but I don't ever remember registering my phone number and address with anyone. I'll have to look into this and see if the shelter did it for me automatically when I adopted him or if he's been microchipped for over three years without anyone having my info. Good thing I came across this thread.

The Humane Society/shelter/dr's office keeps the info on your chip. Or rather, the chip is registered through them until you pay the chip company to change it to you. So basically if your animal is lost they will track the chip to the place you purchased it from. Then the dr's office or the shelter will look up your info (which is why you need to update it with them) and give you a call. You never have to pay to change the registration to your name if you don't want to, just update your info at the shelter/dr's office/whoever you bought the chip from.
