Can someone tell me the benefit of microchipping our pup? If his tags are on, why microchip? Origionally I thought that it was like doggie lo-jack. Like a GPS chip so if he gets lost or stolen you can tell where he is (I know...silly, but a good idea I thinK!!!!)

Also, did you put your dog under some type of light anestesia (sp?) while being chipped? My vet recommended that.
Thanks

Tags get lost. Microchips stay forever. I am getting Peanut microchipped when he goes in to get Neutered at the end of the month but our last dog was awake and he didn't mind it at all.

Microchip is a great benefit ....if your pup gets lost ...or runs out the door without his collar ...or his collar slips off...Boo was microchipped when he was neutered at 6 months...:).Its a very good idea to microchip your pup ....things happen even to the best of owners....Believe me you will feel better knowing your Boxer can be returned to you ..even without his collar!
You can put important phone numbers in case you can't be found ....I put NO ACE in case of an accident...

I personally think it would be a good idea that the AKC require to have a pup microchipped before they can get their AKC papers !!!! IMO

One more reason

God forbid your pup should ever be stolen, it would help you to get him/her back! Definitive proof that your boxer belongs to you could be really important to protecting your rights to get your dog back

If your pup were to get lost while not wearing his collar and tags or even if he was wearing them collars and tags can come off or be removed. Stray dogs are found all the time with no form of ID on them, its just another way to ensure the dog gets reunited with its owner.

Both my dogs are microchipped and neither were asleep for it, it is a big needle but its quick and relatively painless.

I'm just trying to figure out why they wanted your dog under anesthia(sp) (at least I'm not the only person who can't spell that word) Its not necessary all of mine were awake when they had their chip put in their skin...

Both my furkids have microchips. There's an easy website access where you can change information if you move and I was told that dog wardens automatically check for chips now. I don't know if it's true but I hope so. I feel much better knowing I have a better chance at getting them back if somehow they got lost or stolen.

I was thinking about having Oscar microchipped. He likes to slip out of his collar.
And the cost probably isn't too bad either.

Thanks

I'm making an appointment for Mason within the next few weeks. I was planning on calling the local shelter just to see if they do scan just in case Mason is ever lost. I've heard that most shelters & many vets are now scanning. I know I'll feel more comfortable.

I want to get Vegas microchipped too.The only thing is I don't know which company to choose. In Canada there seems to be 3 main companies...Does it matter which one ? Will a shelter's scanner pick up any one?
