hi everyone,

this might be a really silly question, but i'm wondering what the best method is to take a puppy out to do her business?? should i take her out and just stand in one spot and let her sniff around ONLY in that spot until she does something, OR do i let her sniff around the whole yard and just follow her lead until she finds an area she likes? we are having some trouble with getting her to focus on doing her business (she IS just a puppy so i know she gets distracted, but i'm just trying to help eliminate that!). if she takes a really long time, i do bring her back inside for like 20 min and then go back out and try again.

we live in a townhouse and have plenty of grass space in the backyard, but it's not fenced in, so we just take her out on the leash.

thanks in advance!!

i am sure others will chime in & share there stories !

what we did was: because i wanted a basic "potty spot" in one area of the yard ( 2 large pups this is handy )

i would always at first take them out on a leash ( reg 6 ft ) and just stand in that spot till they where done. throw 'potty party"

then off leash for some play ( fenced yard )

back on leash to spot - when done~ through "potty party"

this taught my guys two things - you have to go before u get to play & going didnt mean right back inside !

just what worked for us !! and of course use the parts you like & change the others to suit ur pup & family !!

hope this helps !

Potty training is always the most stressful part of having a puppy in my opinion. Though boxers are really easy to train. My girl has only pooped in the house one time and that was because something didn't agree with her not because she didn't know any better. I'll list a few things we did and I'm not saying it'll work cause all dogs are different but it's a start.

Get lots of treats cause you'll need them
Make sure you take him/her out right after they eat, drink, wake up from nap or sleeping.
Pick a key word that you'll use everytime you take her out like "go potty" or whatever u like just make sure you keep saying it when they're looking for a spot
If she starts to play take her str8 inside to show that going outside is for business only.
Like you said wait 20 or 30 minutes then try again until she goes
When she finally goes praise her with treats. Make it a really big deal she did her business.

Just remember when i say it's easy don't expect it to be overnight it could take up to 6 months or so. Repetition and consistency is key. Just keep it up and it'll pay off.

My girl is 8 months old now.. We never did show her any particular spot in the backyard to do her business like others suggest. She goes where she pleases and we clean up later. She seems to find a "secluded" place for her #2's. But if you know where their usual spots are, it saves the whole "minefield" game walking through the yard.
At first, I would say "go pee" before opening the door. When she would pee, I'd say "good girl" with a couple pats on the back and bring her inside right after. As for when to take her out, we listened to others advice. For the first couple months we would follow her everywhere.. when she started sniffing around in circles, it was a good sign that she needed to pee. After play sessions, drinking, or after naps, we would take her right outside. She seemed to catch on fairly quickly which was nice. At around 5-6 months we put a bell on the door handle, showed it to her a few times before letting her outside, and now we listen for the "ding, ding".

I never put my dogs in specific spots to go potty, yet they do it in the same place every time. Marlee gets self-conscious so she goes behind the fence and Dodger goes over and down a little hill, so you can't see him poo. Haha.
