Meds to AVOID in Boxers?

I did try doing a search but came up with very little information. As Jersey had such a bad reaction to her 12 week vac shots, I've been very careful about what drugs or medications she is given. At this point, I'd like to keep an on going list of any drugs that even -remotely- might be a bad idea for a boxer.

I'm asking our knowledgable folk here to post with what they know. Once i've got a list, I'll add it to my website, but it's mainly for my personal use (and Jersey's).

I'm aware of Acepromazine and of the Proheart 6 injection. Other than that (and our own horrible experience with the Leptospirosis vac) I have nothing on the list.

Thank you all in advance for your comments and links to sites with further information!

Any drug or vaccination has the potential for side-effects, often serious ones - especially in a dog that has already reacted to something else (and thus may have a compromised immune system).

I would avoid drugs and vaccinations as much as is humanly possible, and work with a holistic or homeopathic vet when intervention is absolutely needed, as they are more trained to associate even the smallest reactions with the drug/vacc, and they realize that a reaction months or years later could still be due to that drug/vacc. (Plus, they know how to work to clear the reaction from the dog, instead of just suppressing it further.)

REALLY?? Wow... I need to look into that. Laika has had ONE of these shots, but I don't think she's gonna be getting any more now!!

If Jersey had a bad reaction to the vaccs, you may want to consider having blood titers done every year rather than giving "scheduled" boosters. The titers will show whether or not she needs the booster shots and will avoid over-medicating. Most holistic vets will do titers, while a lot of conventional vets won't - depends on your vet.

Sometimes you can even get a rabies vacc waiver from your town if she has medical proof of a bad reaction.

Thanks for the info. I do plan on doing titers instead of shots next time round. I was mostly curious about a list of things that shouldn't be given to boxers. We will be coming up to heartworm and flea season soon, so I want to be prepared for the meds that will be suggested to me and be informed ahead of time for what to avoid.

I remember someone on this board saying that he gave his senior boxer acetominophen (sp?) which is the same as tylenol. He didn't know at the time that it is toxic to dogs. After a short while on this drug, his dog died. :(
