My 1 and 1/2 year old girl is all of the sudden getting small bald patches on her head and face. They aren't anywhere else on her body, and she isn't itching. I have a vet appointment for Tuesday, and I had thought it was getting better, but the closer I look, I see little tiny ones also.

She has 3 that are about the size of a dime, and about 10 or so that are very small, and you can only see them if you look close. She isn't itching or scratching at them, and obviously since they are on her head, she isn't biting. My husband thinks its just because the dogs play so rough, but Princess doesn't have any at all. I looked up mange, and she doesn't seem to have any of the other symptoms that go along with them, and she isn't sick. She is eating and drinking plenty, and has no diahrea or vomiting. She is plenty active, cold wet nose, all that sort of thing.

Any ideas what it could be or advice on what to do? I am at a loss here and worried about her. I was wondering if maybe it was her food. We switched food about 6 weeks ago, and this started showing up about 2 weeks ago. Like I said originally we tho ught it was just from the playing, but I got concerned so we are taking her to the vet. Was hoping for some advice in the meantime.

It sounds to me like it could be demodex mange. It often seems to start with dime size patches. Make sure that your vet does a skin scraping for mites.

Hello,

My Kaya is having the same problem right now. She has a patch on the side of her face about the size of a silver dollar where her hair fell out. At first it was just red dry skin, then she started scratching it and now she has scabs there. She is still eating well and very active. When we took her to the vet he scraped her skin. He did not meantion anything about mange but said a certain type of mite all dogs have seem to build up and bother her. He gave us antibiotics and some cream to apply once a day. Now from what I have been reading it sounds like mange.

I was wondering what I can give her to help boost her immune system? And how long does it usually take for this to go away? Her scabs have started to heal since we put her on the antibiotics but now it looks like more hair is falling out.

Any advise?
