Hi, I am new to this forum and website. My husband and I have two boxers (Zeek and Burke) and we miss Matthias very much. He was sick with a fever, listlessness, not eating very much and general malaise for three weeks. We visited our vet numerous times where blood tests and X-Rays were done. Different levels were elevated and then okay and they ended up saying it was pancriatitis (spelling??). I am a teacher and I took off Thursday, May 6th because Matthias and I both were not feeling well. At lunchtime my husband Matt came home and Matthias had "an episode" ( He had aertic stenosis and was taking atenolol for it). We took him to our vet because his guns were white and (to make a long story short) we had to put him to sleep just after midnight on 5-8 because his lungs were filling with fluid and he could not breathe. His heart was diseased from the infection he had been fighting and he was having arrythmias (spelling, again) and going for 6.2 seconds without a beat.

Matthias was put to sleep in our arms and we know it was the best decision. As I recently told a friend, "He had the biggest heart of any dog I knew, but his heart couldn't keep him alive"

Matthias' care was wonderful--he was at Michigan Vet Specialist who cared for his every need. We only needed for him to live longer than his 7 1/2 years.

Matthias was honestly the best dog I ever had and I grew up with dogs my whole life. He loved everyone, NEVER growled or fought with any dog or human. I was a step-parent to him but I loved and cared for Matthias like he was my own.

Any help with the whole grieving process would be appreciated. Matt and I are very sad and the dogs have been involved in some dominance fights lately. Thank you so much for reading our story--it is so rough having to cope with the loss of true family member.

I appreciate your time,
Sarah

I am so sorry. There realy isn't anything I can say that will help you feel any better right this minute but just know that there are others who sympathize and empathize. He is no longer in pain and I'm sure he knew he was loved. Someday his memories will bring smiles instead of only tears. Perhaps you can set up a memorial for him with his picture and a nice setting or urn with his collar. My best thoughts and wishes, I am very sorry.

My heart goes out to you. We lost our first boxer, Barkley in September 2002. It is still hard. I read your post and started to cry. It is so difficult to lose a dog, they are a part of your family. It will become easier and the memories are very special. Bark was also sick and he passed before we were to have him put to sleep. I think he knew I would have a very hard time doing that...even though it would have been for the best. You're in our thoughts and prayers and I'll bet your two boxers will help you to feel better.
We now have 2 boxers. They are 1 1/2 and they are complete idiots, I wouldn't trade them for anything and they keep me smiling. Hope you get to feeling better!!!

I'm so sorry you lost Matthias. He sounds like he was a wonderful boy! You did your best for him, and you were with him when he passed, and I think that means so much to our babies when they have to go.
