CANINE CLOWNS
He is the clown of the dog fraternity, canines answer to vaudeville. A laugh a minute, live life to the fullest, maximum velocity version of canine slapstick. But he is also a sympathetic soul, a shoulder to cry on, a confidante. He is all that is good in a dog.
He is of course The Boxer.
A breed of dog developed in the late 19th century by the Germans to act as a guard and companion, the boxer has certainly carried these traits admirably through it's history. He is a fearless defender of his loved ones and all the time he is doing this the aura he has when around his humans positively exudes love and devotion! This is a dog that gives of himself unconditionally and totally to his people, he has an endless capacity to love.
He is a versatile dog too our boxer. At different times he has been used as a service dog in wartime, he has been a sight dog for the blind, served as therapy dogs in institutions for the elderly or infirmed by just visiting and being there for people. He is a showoff and performs well in the conformation world of dog showing, he can excel at agility and be taught any trick with patience. He will do what is required because he wants to and can be mortified if spoken to in any harsh tone. The look on the face of a chastised boxer is one all should see. It is human.
I have had the privilege of being with boxers for 10 years now. My first, Max, came to me in time of need. He was my constant companion, my buddy. I could depend on Max. Sadly he is now gone but his memory is with me forever. There will never be another Max but over the last few years I have been lucky enough to share my time and house with many beautiful boxers. At present I have 8, all different in their own ways but all boxers. All full of the joy of giving.
And in my time as a breeder of these wonderful animals I have been able to see the joy they can bring to others too. I have placed boxers in homes with a young man with cerebral palsy, another went to a young victim of a dog attack who had become afraid of dogs. Both of these became inseperable companions to their young owners. Another time an elderly lady came here to get herself a boxer. She had had a boxer all her life and at 87 wouldn't hear of any other dog despite the sometimes boisterous nature of the breed. She picked out the most boisterous of course!! This young dog was all over her like an explosion. She called him Boomer, within 2 weeks, when she came back to visit she had Boomer completely and happily eating out of her hand.
I can't imagine life without a boxer or two in it now. These are people dogs. The very essence of what makes a dog man's best friend. Trustworthy, reliable, affectionate, co operative and fastidiously clean the boxer is to me all that one could want in a dog.
Their short close fitting coat is easily maintained, their size is medium and managable, their temperament is virtually flawless with child or adult alike and their intelligence is up there with the best of them. They slot easily into family life as a part of that family, they thrive on being one of the "pack" and will defend courageously the family plot.
I wouldn't hesistate for one minute in recommending my beloved boxers to anyone looking for a new family member. In fact I think everyone should own a boxer.
We are all entitled to witness the personification of joy in our lives..........and the boxer will do that, emphatically.
