I don't understand. Did he remove the tumor? My vet believes if there is mast cell tumor that you should cut it out and you want the biopsy to come back stating that the surrounding tissue is clear. My male had a dime size one but he cut deep and much larger than the dime size to get all of it. My first Boxer had a tumor that had to be operated on twice as the first time he did not get it all and it would not heal properly. I have then on good antioxidant supplements. The cancer specialist recommended select. Never heard of predisone being used for that. I have every little bump checked on my kids, I just don't freak anymore, Kit almost had to have her leg amputated but it all healed and she lived for three more years, not dying from cancer but something else.

hello iluvboxers. thanks for responding. spanky's tumors were removed, there were 3 total. i just recieved the biopsy results yesterday. my vet sais they were classified as grade 1 mast cell tumors. they were all benign. he recommended that i put spanky on presidone for at least 6 months. maybe longer. i am not sure how i feel about it. maybe there is something more natural. what kind of antioxidants do you use with your kit. please let me know. any information would be great. thanks again.

This is out of my league, but I can't imagine why prednisone would help recover from benign tumor removal. (??) Can you get a second opinion? Steroids like prednisone have side effects, I think, like weight gain and skin problems(??)

Predisone or any steriod is used for inflamation, sometimes skin allergies. I checked some vet medicine books yesterday but found none that said to use it for that. I have one Boxer on a low dose of dexamethasone .25mg a day, that is one of the mildest forms. She has a disc problem from being so wild. It helps her deal with the pain. She is nine and had little cat feet, just perfect but now they are splayed from the steriod, it relaxes the muscles. She also never cared about eating, now she is the first to wake me up for breakfast. I opted for that treament instead of major surgery which we would not know if it would help. She is just made to curtail some of her wild activity and seems to help. Just feed a good diet and I use Select vitamins.

Just wanted to shed some light on the prednisone issue:

When a cutaneous mast cell tumor cannot be controlled by surgery or radiotherapy, medical treatment is appropriate. Prednisone has been the mainstay of treatment, but recent evidence suggests that prednisone alone achieves very short-term remission. Chemotherapy drugs such as vinblastine, vincristine, and cyclophosphamide can be added to the protocol to lengthen the remission of prednisone-sensitive mast cell tumors. Chemotherapy does not appear to be beneficial in the treatment of prednisone-resistant mast cell tumor.

Aimee, would you give predisone to you dog? I just question giving it if doesn't help? I hate what it does to Dix. My vet now really isn't afraid to call other vets and refer you to a specialist. I really respect him for that. I question everything anymore. I just felt the disc surgery was going to be really hard on her, the recovery would have been harder. The steriod helps her deal with the pain. I know that they give chemo patients steroids for help with the pain. Is that why they would give them to dogs? Very curious now, hey so glad the tumors were benign!

Prednisone

Rebel was on Prednisone for cancer (Lymophosarcoma). We tried the Pred after chemo was ineffective. It helped a great deal, but he did have an increased thirst and hungar. I would use it again but only in those medical situations where the 'big gun' drugs were required, with care, and only after looking at all other types of treatment. This site has some good info: http://www.peteducation.com/pharmacy/glucocorticosteroids.htm
