My baby boy developed a lump on his right rear side shortly after Christmas. Unfortunately, since I thought it was a cyst or a wort I didn't take him to the vet right away. This past Monday I noticed that he had developed another one on his right shoulder. Meanwhile, his first lump continued to get larger. I was able to get an appointment with the vet last night. She aspirated the larger lump and found granular cells and recommended that we have both tumors removed and have them biopsied. We scheduled the surgery for this coming Tuesday.

I'd appreciate finding out if mast cell tumors are common in such young pups? Also, does anyone have any insights on what we can expect?

Thank you so much for your help.

Mast cells are very common for boxers. Unfortunately age doesn't play a role. My Austin had one removed when he was only 4. The important thing is that they get clean margins, so expect to see an incision much larger than the lump itself. Then they will grade the tumor, 1 being the best and 3 being the worst. Austin's was a grade 2. He hasn't had any further treatment after the surgery. Good luck on Tuesday, let us know how it goes.

Thank you for the information. I'll let everyone know how it goes. The vet said we should have the biopsy results within a few days of the surgery.
