My sweet Sampson had a mast cell tumor removed from the bridge of his nose. He is 4 yrs. old. I rescued him two years ago. He's my velcro dog and I love him dearly. The lab report came back and it is a Grade 3. All I can find on the internet are really sad prognosis reports saying the majority don't make past six months. The margins were clean. Does anyone have anything they can share. Thanks in advance for any news.

I read that they don't make it past 6 months without supplementary chemotherapy after the excision. Maybe your baby would be a good candidate for chemo. You never know.

If the margins are clean then I can't see why there would be a problem. Has the cancer already spread through another means? Gnarly has had a mast cell tumour removed (when he was two) and because the margins were clean nothing else was done about it and his now four years old, no drama. Your vet will know whether chemo is required.

Grade 3 tumors are usually very aggressive and invasive. There could be still be dormant cells within the body that if not destroyed, will eventually become active.

Also, the fact that it was on his nose, and not his liver or some other vital area is a good thing. Don't forget to get a second opinion!! I hope it turns out alright.

Thanks for your responses. I made an appointment with an oncologist for next Wednesday (soonest they had). Hopefully after that I will at least know all of the facts of what is to come. I'll post what I find out after, maybe it would be some help to someone else. Anyway, thanks again.

I agree with Oz - clean margins sound pretty good. Curly just had a grade 2 removed and outside of regular checks prognosis is very good.
Did you have buffy coats and blood work? Our vet explained those would show if the cancer was in the blood or body.
