Massive Drooling

My husband and I have a 8-month old male, Toby. Toby is not neutered (this is a big disagreement between my husband and I...he is siding with male pride). But at anyrate, Toby is in the crate from 3PM - 6PM daily while there is no one home. When I arrive home to him, you would have thought it rained buckets in his crate. He is foaming at the mouth and has covered the entire crate in an inch or two of drool (it is a MESS). I have tried "Pet Sedate" to try to relax him with no success. I tried putting chewy toys in the crate and he has always gone to the bathroom while they were in there with him. Is there anyway to control the drooling or is this just his permanent seperation anxiety? It is quite a mess and we have already gone through two metal crates due to rusting. I hate to think of him losing that much fluid. I have tried keeping him loose in the house during that time, but then he chews and goes to the bathroom on the carpet (very rebellious). Anyone with any experience or any ideas???

Seems to be a case of seperation anxiety for sure. There are ways which take time and patience to curb this. There are days worth of posts here at BW reguarding this. Try doing a search on seperation anxiety or SA and you will find alot of great info.

As far as the "male pride thing" with your hubby I would try letting him read some posts here at BW concerning the many advantages of having all non-breeding dogs fixed. There are MANY reasons to do this and the #1 reason is the health benefits that it provides. If he truly loves your pup then there should be no other discussion.....(guilt him if you have too, LOL).

You mentioned that if left out of the cage that he will have accidents and chew things up being rebellious? Again, with the proper training this behavior can be changed. Of course some pups are far better than others when it comes to this subject but they can learn to behave (no accidents or chewing up things), while you are away.

Training and lots of patience and it can get done.

Mine did the same..

Mine did the same thing, but he was 9-11 weeks. he stopped after finally getting use to the crate. it might just take some time or you could take a look at the link she gave you above! i agree with cami..
it is anxiaty problems.

I would come home and take brocky out of the crate thinking he peed on himself, but finnally found out it was drool, he'd drool all over himself, on his tummy, neck, mouth, head. i hope he gets over it! good Luck!

I'd get him neutered, we asked our vet about this.. there's lots of advantages as said above. ALOT of dogs that have been found and then end up at shelters are usually not neutered, males. because alot of dogs that are not fixed try to escape every chance the can get, when you open the door anything! and some health and behavior issues!

yes, it does sound like separation anxiety, and i would take care to address it specifically sooner rather than later (speaking from personal experience), whether it be with a behaviorist, or medication. there are many threads on this topic here...
