Mass/tumor/knot found, what to expect?

Good morning all... Last night, we discovered an approximately 3 inch, hard mass/tumor/knot on Duncan, our 4 1/2 year old boy. It's located in between his arm pit and breast bone. I am shocked that we just noticed this, considering the size of it (as an FYI, he hasn't showed any strange/out-of-the-ordinary behavior or personality changes recently).

As everyone can understand, this is very upsetting, since he is an important part of our family. I have made an appointment for this Friday with the vet.

Does anyone have any input regarding what to expect financially? My assumption is that this will be removed and biopsied... I am curious as to what this may cost.

I appreciate any advice I can get...

Thanks and God Bless,
Shanna

It really could be anything. However, the location you described sounds like it could be a lymph node. Dogs have peripheral lymph nodes located in various spots around the body. One place is sort of in front of the shoulder area. If it is a lymph node, it could be enlarged for any number of reasons...infection, allergies, etc. It's always best to have lumps/bumps evaluated by a vet.

Good luck to you.

I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this. We recently had a lump removed from Spud's shoulder which the vet didn't like the look of. Once removed, we found it was a benign tumour of the hair follicle but obviously we were so worried until we got the results. The vet didn't want to biopsy it, feeling it best to get rid of it anyway (as it turned out, a good descision, because although not cancerous it would have ulcerated and turned nasty if left)
In our case surgery and path lab charges cost us £150 ( in uk money...have no idea what that is in dollars! )
I hope your babies lump turns out to be nothing to worry about. Please keep us posted. Sending positive vibes and (((hugs))) from me and Spud.

Shanna -

I'm so sorry that you have to go through the worry. Apollo has just had two tumors removed in the last two weeks.

What to expect?

On the first visit the Vet aspirated two tumors, sent one to the lab (one was fatty) for further testing and did pre-op blood work because she was almost positive the other needed to be removed. Cost $177.00

The second visit was the actual removal. Included pre-op EKG, removal, anesthesia, e-collar, and antibiotics. Also included the cost to send the mass to the lab. Cost :$450-500

Then we found another one. This one included the removal, sending to the lab, lymph node aspiration, pain meds and a catheder for fluids Cost; $430.

I believe we have spent roughly $1500 in the last three weeks for two tumors to be removed and tested. I should do a Master Card commercial.

The cost of having a healthy, happy boxer named Apollo that loves me unconditionally : PRICELESS.

Hope this helps and good luck!
