Cassie's Mom

My Cassie, is a 10 year old brindle, with white chest and 4 white paws. Have had others dogs in my life, but, none compare to Cassie. So intelligent, well-mannered and loveable. She is my baby.
A few months ago, she started having difficulty walking on her one back leg, thought it might be arthritis. But, 2weeks ago, the vet's X-rays, confirmed that is was a tumor on her spinal cord. He said due to the location of the mass, there is nothing they can do for her. It was inoperable and started her on tapering doses of Prednisone. She is tolerating the medicine, but shows no improvement. He said we may have 6 more months together. Thankfully, Cassie shows no signs of pain, but, is having difficulty squatting to go to the bathroom and with steps, due to the atrophy of her back leg. She has had tumors in the past, in her mouth, and on her back, but they could remove them surgically. I just feel so helpless,. Cassie and I have gone thru so much together. ..can't imagine how I will be able to have her put to sleep when the time comes.

Hugs to you and to Cassie. My heart goes out to you. I wish that there was something I could say to make you feel better. Could you maybe seek out the advice of a specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine? It may be worth a try. I have listed their web address below

Hi

Just wanted to send you and Cassie special prayers and lots of good thoughts. We just found out yesterday my Cody (7yrs-big beautiful fawn and white/black..well..kind of gray now..mask) has cancer. We too are devastated. We don't know what kind yet but I am trying to prepare for the worst just in case. I hope you have many days of gentle joy with your Cassie. I will keep her in my prayers-please keep us posted on her progress and maybe the PA website will give you some info that might be encouraging.

About 5 years ago my 2 boxers were playing one day and all the sudden the female started making some loud noises and couldn't walk. We thought she broke her leg and went through alot of tests. Finally we were sent to All-Care Referral Center and they did an MRI. They found that she had ruptured a disk and the pressure was pushing on her nerves which paralyzed her. They did back surgery and after 4 months of rehabilitation at home she regained 98% of her back leg. She went on to live 5 years longer with no other problems. I dont' know that this is the same thing that your dog is suffering from but All-Care is a wonderful facility and they take dogs from all over the United States. They have a cancer wing and orthopedic facility....and the most wonderful doctors and staff you could ever hope to find.
Best wishes.
