Boxer Insane
Mason (5/8/03 – 8/20/14)
It’s been ages since I’ve posted. A lot has changed and not for the better.
On 8/20/14 I had to make the decision we all dread and I let Mason go. He was diagnosed in early Feb with Insulinoma which is a condition where he had tumors on his pancreas which caused his body to produce too much insulin and caused his blood sugar to get really low. He should’ve been in the 70-110 range, but he was getting as low in the 20s. Thankfully, he never suffered from seizures or comas that some other dogs deal with. The main symptom he showed was leg weakness and mild twitching. During his initial appointment to pinpoint the cause of his issue the vet suspected heart problems and did an echo which also showed an inoperable heart tumor. Two whammys.
Because of his age and the heart tumor we opted to not have surgery to remove the tumors on his pancreas. Unfortunately, the only drug we could use to treat him was prednisone which keeps blood sugar levels higher. This unfortunately really took a toll on his system. He gained weight. He was ALWAYS so fit and trim fit around 50-55lb, but he had gained almost 15lb during his 6 month treatment.
His decline happened so fast. Monday he was fine. Tuesday afternoon we came home for our lunch hour to see he had a bout of diarrhea with a bit of blood mixed in. We rushed him to the vet and was given a medication to give him for the rest of the week and then we would re-evaluate him at the end of the week. He also started coughing a bit and wasn’t too keen on moving… at all. Wednesday morning he was coughing even more and just had no interest in anything. I just knew it was time. He was tired. His mind was still there. He was very alert which made it so hard, but his body was shutting down on him.
My parents and I stayed with him until the end and he passed very peacefully. We’re still coping with losing him. He was such a good boy through all of this which really surprised me because he could be a very difficult boy when he wanted to be. I had to check his blood levels 4-6 times daily like a diabetic would and he never once put up a fight. Our house is not the same without him, but I’m glad that he’s no longer in any pain and even happier than we got to spend nearly 11.5 years with him. For the most part, they were a very healthy 11.5 years too. Only until his last 6 months did he have issues. I’m thankful for that.
I’m sure his big brother Riley is watching out for him.
