So I thought my baby girl Roxy (4 months old) had just scraped herself up a bit while playing with a larger dog down at the park. Then I started noticing more patches of hair loss, especially one on her cute lil' face. Took her to the vet for the 2nd time in one week(first went in for an eye infectoin), and found out that she has mange. Has anyone else dealt with this? How long did it take for it to go away? Can't wait until she is better :(

I am sorry to hear that your pup has mange. I don't know too much about mange but there are some very informed people here at BW that should be able to give you some guidance. Welcome to BW!

I am guessing that it is probably demodectic mange by your description. If it is, then you need to try boosting the immune system. Make sure that you are feeding a high quality food. You can also use supplements such as garlic, vitamin c, vitamin e, astragulus, noni, etc. Did the vet give you any instructions or medications? We have been through it and seem to be mostly getting over it now. But it has taken a very long time. It just depends on the individual dog's immune system. Good luck!

Well, the vet gave me a special shampoo, to open up her hair follicles and then some medicine that I have to give her a sponge bath in. Poor little Roxy, who normally just loves her baths, hated it!!! Smelled awful, like chemicals. I will talk to my vet about vitamin supplements to boost her immune system, thanks for the advice!!!!

I did much research on Demodex when looking at a pup we were going to adopt.... didn't work out in that case, but she went to a nice home & we rescued a nice Lab/Aussie mix who is a great friend to our Boxer Sampson.

Anyway........ What I found was what everyone else is saying.... boost the immune system. In fact, I found boosting the immune system in the info I found for Demodex so good I use it with my kids.

Quality Food is #1
Vitamin C & E Supplements
Omega 3 Fatty Acids (I use Fish Oil capsules I get from the health section at Target)

I hear using one of the heartworm preventatives will keep it under control once you get it managed - I think it's Revolution.

The pup we looked at was actually on a daily dose of Ivermectin -which was purchased at a feed store or online at Dro. Fosters.

I understand that stress can be a HUGE factor in Demodex as well, so keeping your pup on a nice routine schedule is a great thing to do.

Good look. I have a great vet & he assured me that Demodex is not a "life sentence" and can be managed.

Max had demodex as a puppy, he had bald patches all over and would itch a lot. Belive me I drove myself and others crazy becaue I thought he would have it forever. We dipped him in this solution, (sorry don't remember the name) every 2 weeks for a couple of months and had skin scrapes in between. Then one day my vet set ITS GONE!!! he hair grew back and he has been healthy ever since.
Good Luck

P.S.
If your baby itches and bleeds (Max did and I had blood patches all over the carpet) use peroxide to get the blood out.
