From what I read it seems like no one is sure whats going on yet. If I were in your place I think I would let my vet come up with something concrete as the problem and then proceed from there. I hope all goes well for you and please keep us updated with the progress.

Sarcoptic mange is generally very itchy, as the mites are burrowing under the skin. He would be scratching incessantly, not just twitching, if it were sarcoptic mange.

I would be hesitant to go with the pred, too, unless he really starts to suffer. Have the hairless areas increased in size or number?

very hard to tell

I should take a picture of the spots to let you see, cause I can't tell from the list what best describes them.
They are getting worse and spreading slowly, small white dots about the size of pencil erasers, only on his back. It began with a small patch of about 8 dots. There is no redness, or scales or icky stuff. And he is just twitchy when you touch his back other wise it does not seem to bother him. I guess it must be an allergic reaction to something from the kennel, maybe that he could've not had a problem with if he had not gotten so run down. I researched some natural kibble sites today and I am going to switch him to nutra pet active I think. I didn't realize proplan had stuff that was so bad for my baby!
