I posted a while back about my pup having little bumps on her back
since then she has itched a bald spot on her shoulder. I took her
to the vet today and he said she does have mange locally and that
the bumps are probably a result to a staph infection caused by the
mange. He gave me some ointment to put on the bald spot and antibiotics
for the infection. He said that hopefully it stays local and doesnt spread
and that if it does that the medicine that is used to treat it is not
very healthy. My question is that does it usally spread and if it does
could the medicine they use hurt my pup?

No, it doesn't usually spread. Less than 10% of dogs who get demodex mange develop it as generalized rather than localised. And even amongst those few, 30-40% can recover without treatments.

As for whether the medicine can hurt, the answer is an unequivocal yes. How much depends on exactly what he's talking about, of course. But if (for example) he was meaning mitaban dips - that can hurt, even kill. Any "medicine" used for killing demodex mites is actually insecticide/pesticide. Putting that on the dog, or having them ingest it certainly has effects. And particularly in the case of the dips, it's actually a case of seeing who succumbs first - dog or mites. It is usually, but not always, the mites.

I think I replied to one of your previous posts. My Shae had d-mange when she was younger and before I did anything, I read, read, read on BW! Got info from Gmac and others. We chose to treat it ourselves and do the wait/watch thing and it turned out great. We added 'Missing Link' to her diet along with fish oil caps. And I ordered some ointment called "Goodwinol" I believe,to apply to the raw areas. It took a while but it all cleared up beautifully and her coat is fine now! Good luck!

Actually Goodwinol is what the vet sold us to put on it for 10 days
