Mange

My baby girl was diagnosed with mange also on Saturday. I was noticing little spots around her neck, on her forehead, by her shoulders and on her side. I thought they were from Dexter, my roomates boxer( they play fight ALOT!), The vet scraped and found Mange. He said it wasnt contagious, so I guess I can trust him, but I shouldnt because he was referred by the pet store where I bought Maya, read on......

On another note, my roomate was really taken aback about this and decided to call the breeder to see if it might be in her gene pool. She was impossible to track down, the pet store only gave a city name, no phone #. From what I understand is if your dog has ever had mange, you should never breed. So to make a REALLY LONG story short- The pet store we bought Maya from lied about her breeding, forged her papers, and most likely undervaccinated her( Her list of vaccinations was written on a sticky and the dates were definately not correct) When we put the deposit on her she looked good and healthy, A week later when we came to pick her up, she looked as if she was literally dying, obviously neglected since he knew she was sold already. The breeder sent 3 puppies to the pet store owner, and never got paid for any of them, he sold those three puppies, then continued using her papers to sell other boxers, he just changed the dates on the D.O.B. When we called him he rudely told us he never heard of this woman and that he bought Maya from a broker then hung up the phone on us. I really want this guy to pay for his crimes. Also I want my money back I paid $1100.00 for a backyard dog ( I still LOVE her!) I feel violated.

My questions.

What can I do or what governing agencies can I call to help stop this guy from doing this to the next person? This is more important than just getting my money back.

The Mange, how do I know if it is the contagious type? Can I get it? Should I wash my bedding?

Also, When I took Maya for her first Vaccination, the vet gave her the LEPTO vaccine. She had a really bad allergic reaction and I rushed her to the ER where they gave her steroids and an IV. The breeder told me that should never be given to any dog under the age of 1 year, is that true?

Mayamia: I'm going to split your post from the rest of this thread. You've got a whole lot of questions there and you'll get more meaningful replies if this is in a thread of it's own rather than appended to someone else's. More people will read it too... ;)

Not at all sure that age makes a particular difference to a dog's reaction to the Leptospiriosis shot - but it is something that a great many dogs have bad reacctions to. IMO unless you're living in a very high risk area it is better not to give the vaccine at all. In your pup's case, now knowing that he reacts badly, I would be extremely wary of ever giving it to him again - reactions like that can get worse with each repeated exposure. Here are a few previous threads, which can give you a good idea: http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41893

As for the mange - you need a vet to do a skin scrape and determine what sort of mange it is. If it is sarcoptic mange, then yes it is contagious. If it is demodectic (the more common) then it is not contagious and the problem is really her immune system being overwhelmed. Since your vet said not contagious, we can be pretty sure it is demodex ;) If you do a search here, you'll find plenty of information and posts from people who've dealt with it.

This is why you should never ever buy from a pet store. A "good quality" reputable breeder would never place their pup in a pet store in the first place. It's true that you should never breed a dog with mange, but the people you were dealing with were obviously BYB's looking to make a buck.

The best thing you can do for your pup is to boost her immune system, feed her a premium quality kibble, and help her overcome her D-mange (then spay her!)

Good luck. My Maddie had demodex and eventually conquered it. It is surmountable
