About two months ago and i took him to the vet, she told me that he in fact had mange and gave me a collar to get rid of it. that didnt work, so i go back and he just kept getting wose and then she gave me a dip. i did the dip and still no better the symptoms will not go away. Could somebody tell me what to do cause im tired of giving money to the vet and getting no results? Please help me! p.s. tyson is about 10 months old

Kota had mange last summer. After much confusion about what the heck it was, and why the heck she had it, we finally came to a conclusion as to what the problem stemed from.

Every dog has mange but usually the dogs antibodies can fight them quite well. Well, with Kota when she got stung by a bee, all her antibodies went to this bee sting and the mange got control in a couple of spots (where she lost her hair). Well, she is alergic to the sun, so sometimes her antibodies went to the hives she got when she was in the sun too long and the mange would come back again-- anyway.. this whole time we had no idea what the world was happening, but finally she got tested for mange and the doc put her on an ointment which we applied once a day for 4 weeks.. and now the mange is completely gone. Also the doc told us that her antibodies are stronger now (she just turned a year old) , so even a bee sting should not cause the mange to come back).

I am not sure what the ointment is called that we used, but I will look at it tonight and try to post it tomorrow.

If you want to see a pic of Kota's mange spots, there is a pic of her laying on the grass in my gallery that shows them pretty well.

Good luck to all of you!!

Here is a helpful site if you were interested in trying a natural treatment.

http://www.akitarescue.com/demodectic_mange-a_natural_treatment.htm

Lar is right - demodectic mange crops up when the dog's immune system gets down. I think the best method of treatment is boosting the dog's immune system so that he can fight off the mites on his own. You will find out more information re: supplements to boost the immune system on that link.

Again, check the link I gave you earlier to the BW thread on mange so that you can read more info on it as well as additional tips for at-home natural treatments and supps.
