male or female rescue?

Hi all-
I don't know whether this should go on this forum or the rescue forum, but here it is anyway. As I stated in the rescue thread, we want to rescue/adopt another boxer. A big question that we have is concerning the gender. We have heard that two males may have problems with dominance. So in all of your opinions, which would be better for both us and Cooper (male), a female, male or either? thanks in advance for the advice!

Froom what I have seen most of the times 2 of the same gendar, does not work for peace in the houshold I would go for 1 boy and 1 girl. I have three 1 boy and two girls, the second girl was an accident we found her runnig down the middle of the road and for some reason our brindle girl accepted her. We had a couple of times when the head puppie(the brindle0told annie what was what.

You're going to have to try the dogs out together before you can get a real answer. I have had dogs of the same gender together with major personality conflicts, and with none whatsoever. While speaking in generalities, one of each gender is the best match, that can create problems too depending on the individual personalities of the dogs. In my experience, though, two females is a much more volatile mix than two males- provided that neither is in tact. There are many people that have been successful with M/M, F/F, and M/F pairings.

I agree with Cubby that it will really depend on the individual dogs. Most rescues will try to evaluate their dogs behavior with other male and female dogs to identify problems in advance, but in the end it will come down to your particular dog and the rescued dog. I know most people say it is generally easiest to have one of each, but over Christmas I took Dallas home -- my sister was there with her boxer and my parents have one as well. All three are neutered males and they got along great -- just a minor scuffle at the beginning of the weekend to establish pack order.

Everyone is right - it really depends on the two dogs you're putting together.

We have a really passive neutered male - Magnum (who would probably submit to a squirrel), and we adopted another male (Omar) that we already knew, so I was aware of his temperment as well. Given all that, I knew I could put the two of them together. They are awesome together.

God forbid something ever happen to Magnum, I would have to be careful with selecting another dog, other than a puppy, with Omar.

Most rescue organizations will allow you a trial period to see how things go once you bring the new dog home.
