Male dog owners....your help needed!!

I have a male Dalmatian..."Skylar"
He is 18 months old and was neutered at 5 months of age.
When he was about 14 months....he discovered that he didn't need to squat to urinate and the leg lifting began.

The problem is....now that he has learned to lift, he doesn't let us know when he needs to go out....he just lifts his leg and lets it go on the walls, refridgerator, tables, chairs, even us if out backs are turned.:(

I have never before had a male dog that was neutered, that picked up the habit of leg lifting in the house.

Has anyone else had such a problem, and if so, any suggestions?
I have tried everything I know to do. I immediately take him out. I clean the area thoroughly with disinfectant to get rid of any scent. But it is getting to be a real problem because it has gotten to be a daily occurance.

I have had fosters that have had this problem. I know your frustration. We would always give them a firm no when caught in the act and then immediately take them outside to potty and give them a treat upon relieving themselves. We also give them a treat everytime they go out and potty outside with lots of praise. Once we realize this is a problem, we either tether the dog to us or something in the house or crate the dog when they cannot be supervised. The crate has always worked wonders. Most of the time this clears it up for us. They don't like being on a short leash and they also don't like to be crated that often. What they do like is praise and treats when they potty outside so for the most part, we've had pretty smart guys come through who learn pretty quickly the rules of the house I hope this was helpful.

I agree with Aimee and would give her suggestions a try :D Especially if he is peeing on you in the house :eek: That is a behavior you want to get under control fast :p

We are using a crate with him.
We can take him outside to potty....he will go...usually several times. Soon after bringing him back inside....he goes again :rolleyes:
I don't know why he started doing this all of a sudden. He was fine with his potty habits until he started lifting his leg at 14 months.

If he is peeing that much you might want to run him by the vet and have him checked for a UTI. Because that just really sounds like a lot of peeing for a dog over a year old. However if he is drinking lots of water then that might be the culprit

I have found regular household cleaners/disinfectants dont get rid of the dog odors. I use Simple Solution for regular cleanups and also use it when I shampoo the carpets. I use lots of it. probably twice as much as I should but I dont want doggie odors in the house. And a friend told me she used Oxyclean in her shampooer. I tried it last shampoo and I think it works really well also. When it hits the hidden, you can smell the odor , it quickly goes away but at least I know I have found any hidden spots ( neighbors dog visits and occassionaly leaves me a hidden present , them mine wants to add to it.) But that is the only household product I think I would try . I have also started using those cammie cloths like you use on cars for clean ups...Since I dump a large amount of Simple Solution in the carpet, they absorb much more than paper towel and are reusable.

Diana, our male dachsie started doing this one time - it turned out to be a UTI which I hadn't even suspected. I know it's very annoying. Also, once they get that urine scent on something, they think it's okay to keep going there. I'm sorry you have to deal with this, especially after all you're going through with Dixie.
