Making an area off limits?

In our (very little) house, there is a 6x6 foot tiled "foyer area" at the front door. The rest of the living room is carpeted. I have been thinking that if I could train my dogs they can not go into that area without a leash it would help with a lot of our issues (sneaking out, jumping guests, etc).

But I can't quite grasp in my head how to go about doing it, especially since they have been allowed in that area in the past.

I have tried to search for similar question, but didn't find anything...though maybe I am not coming up with good search terms.

Thanks!

They actually don't jump on people...Mac is more a wiggle at your feet type. So I worded that wrong. LOL

And I have taught Mac to sit and stay at the door before I let him out. But I kind of thought that since there is that visible boundary area, it would be helpful and reinforcing to keep them out of that area. There are occasional screwups and interesting things outside occasionally break their training...so I thought one more "barrier" to break (not physical, but, oh I dont know,) may stop the occasional mess up.

I'll edit my original post...oops, cant edit. Ok, I hope people read this.

If I understood it correctly, you want your dogs in a particular area only when their leash is on, right?
well,
everytine they go in there wthout a leash, you say a word for that particular command (whatever yu want to), and then put the leash on, and they go in there. It takes patience.

I believe every dog can be taught everything if you're patient enough;)
I also experience with my 3,5 year old, as he's growing older, he listens more and understands you better;)

Basak - thanks for the help. Let me ask you...when I was last here (a year or so again, more or less) you were considering gettign a girl boxer from your local vet. What happened with/to her? Just curious:)

Sullivanspop - re: the baby gate, lol MacDougal acts like those aren't even there! lol

Mac and Moe are both 2.5 now, and listening better all the time, its amazing how as they grow up they can actually focus on ME...:)

JulieM -
Thanks! Those will help me. And you understand perfectly why I am asking...even though my dogs don't USUALLY jump (90%), and dont USUALLY (90% for Mac, 60% for Moe the untrainable...lol) sneak out the door, I think the extra precaution will help some.

That was the one moment in my life that I got really really excited and then got very very sad. I still think of her sometimes.
